    The A5 has reopened in Dunstable following a serious collision in the early hours of this morning.

    Bedfordshire Police say a man has been taken to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge with life-threatening injuries.

    It was just after 06:00 GMT on 11 December when David Mitchell was awoken by an "unbelievable" explosion that caused his home to start falling down around him.

    His house was "shaking and shuddering" so much he thought an aeroplane had landed on it - the walls had collapsed and the roof had caved in.

    Mr Mitchell said his family ran outside and seeing a "huge, huge, fireball", realised the oil depot, some 400m away, had exploded.

    On the tenth anniversary of the Buncefield oil depot explosion in Hemel Hempstead, the Environment Agency says lasting lessons have been learned.

    The blast, which registered 2.4 on the Richter scale, destroyed nearby businesses and homes were damaged across a wide area, but no one was killed.

    Alex Chown, from the Environment Agency, said: "The primary issue was obviously the overfilling system, that was identified as a fault and resulted in an immediate response across the industry to put that right to ensure the lessons learned were adopted straight away."

    • Unleaded motor fuel was being pumped into storage tank 912 in the north-west corner of the site
    • Staff did not realise capacity had been reached
    • Safeguards failed - automatic shutdown did not happen and fuel continued to be pumped in
    • By 05:20 the tank was overflowing through roof vents
    • A fuel and air vapour cloud formed causing an explosion equivalent to 30 tonnes of TNT, measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale
    • Further explosions followed and fire engulfed 20 large storage tanks

    The A5 is closed in Dunstable following a serious collision in the early hours of this morning.

    Bedfordshire Police have said two vehicles collided at the junction of Half Moon Lane and High Street South at 02:45.

  7. Buncefield explosion: Ten years onpublished at 08:42

    Just after 06:00 on 11 December 2005 the UK experienced its largest explosion since World War Two.

    The huge blast at the Buncefield fuel depot in Hemel Hempstead was heard as far away as the Netherlands and shrouded much of south-east England in smoke.

    The A5 is closed between the A505 Church Street junction in Dunstable and the Whipsnade turn off in Kensworth due to an accident in the early hours of this morning.

    There is a diversion in operation through Whipsnade via the B4541 Whipsnade Road and Lynch Hill.
