Plans that could see firefighters respond to 999 calls for the ambulance, is not "papering over the cracks", the deputy chief fire officer of Hertfordshire fire service has told BBC Three Counties Radio.
Darryl Keen says the proposal is a way of "supporting partner emergency services."
A decision will be made later today if a six-month trial can go ahead to give the green light for fire crews to respond cardiac arrests and chest pain calls.
