The main thing to come out of court today is just how controlling 26-year-old Carl Langdell is.

I heard only this week that he sacked his own defence team, so for the past few days he's represented himself.

After the sentencing Langdell, from Roundmoore Drive in Cheshunt, asked the judge if he could correct him on one thing. Judge Andrew Bright responded by saying "you will have to go through your legal team."

He told them Miss Locke had left in a taxi and he didn't know where she was. Her father, Bill, worked out where Langdell lived and drove there.

They found out Langdell had admitted the murder to his mother. Police were called, and he was found and arrested.

The detective at the heart of the Carl Langdell murder case said a previous conviction for threats to kill a nurse had been "taken seriously".

Langdell, 26, from Roundmoor Drive, Cheshunt, today sentenced to 16 years for killing Essex teacher Katie Locke, had been given a suspended sentence for the threats to kill offence - just 22 days before he murdered Miss Locke.

Det Insp Fraser Wylie said while Langdell had a "behavioural disorder," there had been no need to have him locked up as many people who have issues like that "do not go on to kill".
