    Tesco has agreed to pay a fine of £129m to avoid prosecution over claims of false accounting .

    The Hertfordshire-based supermarket giant had been accused of overstating profits by £326m between February and September 2014.

    The Serious Fraud Office, external said Tesco had co-operated with its two-year investigation and had undergone an "extensive" period of change.

    In addition to the £129m, the supermarket will compensate those who bought shares or bonds between 29 August and 19 September 2014 at a cost of about £85m.

    Tesco's current chief executive, Dave Lewis, said: "We sincerely regret the issues which occurred in 2014 and we are committed to doing everything we can to continue to restore trust in our business and brand."

    Watford striker Isaac Success is determined to help Nigeria qualify for the 2018 World Cup after making his senior debut for the Super Eagles.

    The 21-year-old came on as a substitute on Thursday as Nigeria drew 1-1 with Senegal in a friendly in London.

    "It was a dream come true for me. I thank God for being here representing my country," he told BBC Sport.

    "The energy is there, the mindset of bringing success to Nigeria and to Africa at the World Cup is there."

  12. Herts at War gets grant of almost £100,000 to build WW1 collection published at 17:14 British Summer Time 27 March 2017

    A heritage group has received a grant of close to £100,000 to create a digital archive tracking events from World War One.

    Herts at War, external has been given £99,800 by Heritage Lottery Fund East of England.

    The group will use the cash to build on its Herts at War 1914-1918 project. 

    It aims to identify and preserve unseen and unrecorded historic collections relating to Hertfordshire and the Great War.

    These collections will then be displayed both online and at travelling exhibitions.

  14. Clem Curtis claimed first number one by a British multiracial band published at 17:00 British Summer Time 27 March 2017

    Clem Curtis, who has died at the age of 76, earned his place in music history as the singer of The Foundations' 1967 hit Baby Now That I've Found You - the first chart-topper by a British multiracial band. 

    It was also one of the records that was heavily played in the opening weeks of Radio 1 - and is said to be the first song that got to number one thanks to airplay on the station.

    The Foundations are notable for being one of the few label acts to successfully imitate what became known as the Motown sound.

    However, the singer (back row, left), who lived in Olney in Buckinghamshire, had left the group by the time they had their biggest hit, Build Me Up Buttercup.

    Years later, Curtis won the rights to the band's name and sung the song live on countless occasions.

    One of the lead singers of British band The Foundations, Clem Curtis, has died at the age of 76.

    His wife confirmed that he passed away this morning. He lived at Olney in Buckinghamshire.

    He was perhaps best known for the hit Baby Now That I've Found You in the 1960s.

  16. Murder pair thought they 'could operate outside the law', court hears published at 16:13 British Summer Time 27 March 2017

    A judge has told two drug dealers who killed a teenager they thought they "could operate your depraved business outside the reach of the law, with your owns hierarchies of respect and codes of enforcement".

    Judge Richard Foster was speaking at Luton Crown Court while sentencing Mohammed Noor, 33, (above left) and Albert Prempah, 35, (above right) both from Milton Keynes, to life in prison.

    He said: "You went out in the early hours of 13 September 2016 with that loaded gun and fuelled by drink and drugs."

    Prosecutor Justin Rouse had earlier told the court how Noor had reached through a window in Eaglestone, Milton Keynes, with a gun and pulled the trigger two or three times, but that it did not discharge.

    "He continued pulling the trigger and the gun fired. Suhaib Mohammed (above) was hit in the chest and died from that injury," Mr Rouse said.

    The pair must serve a minimum of 30 years in prison before being considered for parole.

    Two men given life sentences for shooting a teenager had been planning to exact revenge on a robber who had stolen from one of them.

    Mohamed Noor, 33, from Radworthy, Milton Keynes, and Albert Prempeh, 35, of Langland Road, Milton Keynes, had been targeting a man known as "Hypes", which Luton Crown Court heard had robbed Noor earlier on 13 September.

    Instead they ended up killing 19-year-old Suhaib Mohammed, who was shot in the chest in his home in Eaglestone.

    Two drug dealers have been jailed for life after a teenager was shot to death through an open window in Milton Keynes.

    Suhaib Mohammed, 19, was hit in the chest in the living room of a house on Osprey Close, Eaglestone, in the early hours of 13 September.

    A jury at Luton Crown Court found Mohamed Noor, 33, who admitted firing the gun, guilty to murder.

    Co-defendant Albert Prempeh, 35, who led Noor to the address and acted as look-out, was also found guilty of murder.

    Judge Richard Foster said Noor, of Radworthy, Milton Keynes, and Prempeh, of Langland Road, Milton Keynes, must serve a minimum of 30 years before they are considered for parole.
