Love My Chillies is based in Blunham, and harvests millions of chillies each year, making the Bedfordshire village the chilli capital of England.

    BBC Local Live

Investigators are at the scene of yesterday's light aircraft crash in Hertfordshire to examine the wreckage in a field in Luffenhall.

It's been confirmed that the pilot, a man in his 70s from Welwyn Garden City, died at the scene. He was the only person on board at the time.

It's been revealed that a fault was reported with the same aircraft four years ago, when its propeller came off during flight from Hertfordshire.

Agricultural contractor James Irwin came across the wreckage yesterday and dialled 999.

"I didn't see it come down, but saw it in the corner of my eye as I drove past at about 10:15," he said.

"The engine was still running and petrol was coming out of the tank. I rang for the ambulance and fire brigade. They were here pretty quickly."

Another witness, local resident Peter Broadhurst, said: "I heard a whirring with an increasing pitch and then saw it come down very steeply. It hit the ground with a big whump noise."

Police closed Newell Lane, where the microlight came down, yesterday but the road has now been re-opened.

  9. Volkswagen owners protest in Milton Keynespublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

    Justin Dealey
    BBC Three Counties Radio

Volkswagen owners are protesting outside the company's headquarters in Milton Keynes this morning.

Hundreds of thousands of cars were recalled by VW after a scandal over emissions.

The scandal involved VW using illegal software to disguise the level of emissions produced by its diesel powered cars.

Drivers say the fix to the illegal software has caused problems with their vehicles.

Volkswagen maintain that there is no evidence of this.

I've been down to the protest where around 30 people gathered with banners saying "It wasn't broke until VW fixed it" and "VW broke out trust, now they've broken our vehicles".

    Protesters in Milton Keynes

At the protest I spoke to the organiser, Gareth Pritchard, who says the fix is "causing lots of problems".

"We've noticed mechanical failures, people are saying they're struggling with excessive fuel consumption and they're experiencing increased noise and vibration," he said.

"Throughout all this, Volkswagen say none of this is due the fix and these things are just happening.

"We feel like we've been pushed in to this situation where we have to come down to Milton Keynes to raise awareness."

Paul Buckett, head of corporate affairs at Volkswagen, said: "Our customers are our top priority. To date, we have implemented the technical measures in 665,000 vehicles in the UK and the overwhelming majority of affected customers are satisfied.

"As we have said all along, there is no evidence of any adverse impact on the residual value of the affected vehicles as a result of this issue or with their performance following the implementation of the technical measure."

  11. Watford respite centre closure: 'It's going to be a rocky road'published at 09:11 British Summer Time 21 June 2017

Parents are reacting to the closure of a care centre for severely disabled children in Watford.

Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has told them they will close the Nascot Lawn Respite Centre in October.

They say their serious financial situation means they have to focus spending on services they have a legal duty to provide.

Nikki Lancaster, whose 10-year-old son Lennon uses the service every month, says she's worried about how the family will cope.

"With no Nascot Lawn, we won't get a break. We will be working and providing medical care 24 hours a day, 365 day a year," she said.

"It's going to be a very rocky road. It's going to be very daunting.

"We have no idea what will happen, whether we'll be forced to put Lennon in to care due to the fact we won't be able to cope without a break," she said.

Kathryn Magson, chief executive officer of Herts Valleys CCG, says: "Our serious financial situation means that we have to focus our spending on health services that we have a legal duty to provide.

"Herts Valleys CCG will continue to fund a range of health services that support the needs of children and young people.

"We appreciate this will be an anxious time for families and we are meeting with parents and carers to explain our decision and next steps."
