The appointment of John Campbell was subject to the endorsement of the independent Thames Valley Police and Crime Panel, which met earlier and confirmed its support.
Mr Campbell has been deputy chief constable since 2015.
He first joined the police in 1988 and will replace current chief constable Francis Habgood, who is set to retire at the end of March.

The 21-year-old was last seen on Friday 1 February after being dropped off by a taxi close to her home.
Her family have said they hope the new photos will help police searching for the missing student.
"Libby has a big heart", her parents said in a statement. "She is always happy and having fun. She laughs a lot. She is a real family person, and loves spending time at home with them."
The top photo is of Libby on Christmas Day, with the second photo showing her on a trip to Paris in May 2017 during her gap year.

The CCTV images show a woman, confirmed by police as the 21-year-old student, near the Welly Club music venue on 31 January at about 23:20.
Police are continuing to search an area close to the last known sighting of Libby, from High Wycombe.
A 24-year-old man arrested on suspicion of abduction remains a person of interest, police said.
The video, filmed by a camera on a lettings agency next door to the club, shows Libby in a black jacket and a black skirt.
Libby Squire can be seen on CCTV walking towards the queue for the Welly Club music venue.
