    Captain Tom Moore said although he had been made an honorary Colonel he would always be Captain.

    He said he was "very moved" because to receive such an honorary rank in his regiment was "something we would never, ever anticipate".

    "I really am honoured by that and although I can't use it in public it really is something special to be able to say honorary colonel," he said.

    "I'm still Captain Tom, that's who I really am, but if people choose to call me colonel, well, thank you very much!"

    Among the more unusual ways of celebrating your 100th birthday must be by attempting to blow out an Olympic torch.

    This torch from London 2012 was sent to Capt Tom's home in Marston Moretaine by Virgin Radio presenter Chris Evans and is believed to be the only one in existence that can still be lit.

    As the story of Captain Tom's fundraising efforts continues and he heads towards the £31m mark, more about his life before fame has emerged.

    We already now that he joined the army at the beginning of World War Two and served in India and Myanmar, then known as Burma, but a little-known fact - until now - was that on Christmas Day in 1983, he appeared on BBC One's Blankety Blank with Sir Terry Wogan.

    Ruth Madoc, one of the celebrities who appeared in the episode, has sent him a special birthday message.

    "Well, haven't you done well? Iit's wonderful what you've done and many, many congratulations to you on your 100th birthday," she said.

    For every gold medal won by British athletes in the 2012 Olympics, postboxes all over the country were painted gold.

    But now Captain Tom Moore has one in NHS blue in recognition of reaching his 100th birthday and raising £30m for NHS charities.

    Royal Mail said the box on Bedford Road, Marston Moretaine, had been given a makeover, to honour him.

    David Gold, from Royal Mail, said: "His achievements are truly phenomenal, and this is reflected in the affection shown for him across the world.

    "We continue to deliver the many tens of thousands of birthday cards sent from across the UK and abroad as people look to show their gratitude for all Captain Tom has achieved."

    Captain Tom Moore has certainly raised the profile of the Bedfordshire village of Marston Moretaine, about five miles (8km) from Bedford.

    He moved there in 2007 to live with his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her family.

    For several days now, thousands of photos have been sent in to BBC local radio stations across the country, to create a special birthday montage of Captain Tom Moore.

    The idea, from BBC Three Counties Radio, was to make a mosaic image of Capt Tom, with pictures of people saluting the famous centenarian, who has now raised more than £30m for NHS charities.

    A Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) powerboat has been named Captain Tom in honour of the NHS fundraiser.

    The name was suggested as part of a Facebook challenge in which members of the public were asked to think of a name for the boat.

    The winning name was suggested by Louiza Kew, who said the idea came while watching news updates on Capt Tom with her two-year-old son.

    White Watch at Wellingborough, who picked the name, thought it was a fitting tribute to Capt Tom’s efforts.

    Crew commander Ronnie Sherratt said they thought the name was “inspired”.

    “What a great way to pay tribute to this man’s amazing efforts for the heroes of the NHS, and a way to remember something positive from this challenging time in everyone’s lives,” he said.

    For the past week, volunteers and staff from Bedford School, which Captain Tom Moore's grandson, Benjie Ingram-Moore attends, have been opening and sorting the thousand of cards given to Captain Tom Moore.

    The current total stands at 150,000 and is increasing all the time.

    The amazing fundraising efforts of Captain Tom Moore have topped £30m.

    The 100-year-old war veteran originally aimed to raise £1,000 by walking 100 laps of his garden.

    But almost one and half million people have since made donations on the Just Giving website.

    The money will be used by NHS Charities Together on a number of initiatives.

    As of 08:30 this morning seven of the top 10 trending terms on Twitter relate to Captain Tom Moore as people wish the 100-year-old a happy birthday.

    There have been 14.2K tweets using the phrase "Happy Birthday Sir" with others celebrating his new title of Colonel.

    A lot of people have included the phrase #TomorrowWillBeAGoodDay, a quote Captain Tom gave when asked about his message to the British public.

    This morning he updated his quote for his birthday to say it will be a good day.

    Captain Tom's grandson Benjie Ingram-Moore told BBC Breakfast what his grandfather had achieved was "incredible".

    He said: "I've been so proud of him since I was three - I've lived with him since I was three, but this highlights how much of an incredible man he is and I couldn't be prouder of the person he is and the character that he has shown throughout this event."
