    A 72-year-old man has been handed an eight month suspended prison term for fraudulently claiming disability living allowance.

    An undercover surveillance team filmed Parmajit Randhawa, from Wolverhampton, strenuously exercising at a gym in 2013. 

    He failed to notify the Department for Work and Pensions of an improvement in his health in 2011. 

    The court heard he cheated the public purse out of almost £20,000 over a three year period.

  3. Forensic experts combing over the scene where shots were fired in Lozellspublished at 17:51

    Forensic teams have been sent to Finch Road and continue to comb the scene for information to aid their investigation into the shots that were fired, external at around 23:00 on Monday, West Midlands Police say.

    Det Insp Richard Marsh said: "The investigation is at an early stage but we are satisfied there is no threat to the wider public and inquiries into the matter are on-going."

  4. Comedian Jo Brand receives honorary degreepublished at 17:47

    The comedian Jo Brand has received an honorary doctoral degree from Birmingham City University this afternoon, in recognition of her work surrounding mental health. 

    Before going into comedy she trained as a psychiatric nurse and has continued to support a range of charities to raise awareness of mental health issues. 

    She was presented the honour at a graduation ceremony at the Symphony Hall.

  9. Investigation into shots fired in Lozells overnightpublished at 17:07

    Shots were fired in Lozells last night, damaging two houses and a car, but no injuries have yet been reported, police say.

    West Midlands Police have launched an investigation, external after the shots were fired on Finch Road at around 23:00 on Monday.

  10. Hospital trust withdraws junior doctors return to work requestpublished at 16:40

    Sandwell Hospital says it has now withdrawn its request for some trainee doctors to return to work during a 24-hour strike.

    Chief executive Toby Lewis says: "We will keep this situation under review. 

    "The decisions made were made locally, and based on judgements about current and foreseeable pressure...

    "It would be irresponsible to wait for a position that was not recoverable and then act."

  11. On the picket line: Junior doctors report spare beds at Sandwell Hospitalpublished at 16:28

    Earlier there were about 15 junior doctors holding placards outside Sandwell Hospital.

    They say they've had representatives inside the hospital who have told them there are spare beds so they are happy it is safe and they will be remaining on the picket line.

    The junior doctors have told me that 15 minutes before they went onto the picket they received an email ordering them to go back into work.

    They say this didn't follow the procedure agreed between the British Medical Association and NHS England.

    They are getting lots of drivers beeping their horns and support from passers by.

  14. Bomb suspect 'should be returned to UK'published at 15:52

    A terror suspect from the West Midlands arrested and detained while on holiday in Portugal last month should be returned to the UK as soon as possible, an MP says.

    Paramjeet Saini is fighting extradition to India over his alleged involvement in the murder of a Sikh politician in 2009 and bomb attacks in India in 2010.

    He and his family were granted refugee status to stay in the UK until 2023.

    Sherrie Duggan, from Birmingham, suffers from cyclical vomiting syndrome.

    Speaking to 5 Live Breakfast she talked about her attacks, which are characterised by "lengthy vomiting and severe nausea" - she can vomit up to 15 times per hour.

    "It's awful and relentless to live with [...] some days getting out of bed is an achievement," she said.

  16. Good Hope Hospital strike: Industrial action to 'ensure a safe and fair contract'published at 14:57

    Dr Eldilla Rizal (pictured centre wearing red hat), works in anaesthetics at Good Hope Hospital, Sutton Coldfield, and is among junior doctors on the picket line. 

    Dr Rizal says she has been a junior doctor for nine and half years and has two more years of training to become a paediatric intensive care doctor.

    “A resolution would be an agreement to ensure robust safeguards against over working junior doctors and recognition for all work done in anti-social hours,” she said.

    Dr Rizal said the NHS needed more funding to increase its workforce in “all areas”, including nurses, physiotherapists and porters, to “truly sustain a seven-day NHS”.

    She added the striking doctors at Good Hope have had “overwhelming public support” and backing from patients and other staff.
