  1. Meeting to consider Afzal's bid to become Lord Mayor

    Labour councillors in Birmingham will hold a meeting today to consider Muhammad Afzal's campaign to become Lord Mayor. 

    The Aston councillor and chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque - was recorded calling David Cameron an "islamophobe" and criticising the government's prevent strategy which tackles extremism.

    He should consider his position. This is not about gagging free speech. He's entitled to have his say on these matters and represent his own personal views but the difference is - Councillor Afzal was putting himself forward to be Lord Mayor of this city. That is a role, where if you like, gag yourself.
