  1. Paramedic struck off after failing to help collapsed patient who later diedpublished at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2016

    A paramedic who 'failed to take any action to provide care' to a patient who collapsed in the car park of Walsall Manor Hospital and later died has been struck off by the Health & Care Professions Council, external (HCPC).

    Andrew Davies' inaction on 23 June 2012 involved, the HCPC said, a patient who collapsed on two occasions in the car park, while four members of clinical staff, including Mr Davies, were present. The patient later died in hospital. It is understood that patient was Carl Cope.

    The HCPC said Davies was dismissed from West Midlands Ambulance Service on the basis of gross misconduct, before being struck off by the HCPC itself.

    He was not present or represented at the HCPC hearing.

    A man has appeared in court charged with the kidnap and sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in the 1980s.

    David Green, 60, of Moseley in Birmingham, was arrested on Friday in connection with an assault in Weston-super-Mare in July 1983.

    He is charged with kidnap, buggery, attempted rape and indecent assault.

    West Brom manager Tony Pulis says striker Saido Berahino's form is the key to him getting the move he craves.

    Berahino scored his first league goal since October in West Brom's 3-2 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

    Organisers of music event Fusion Festival have announced they will not be coming back to Birmingham - this year's will be held in Liverpool instead.

    Cofton Park hosted the 2015 event during August Bank Holiday weekend, with Ed Sheeran and McBusted among the acts.

    Network Rail has announced a major programme of works to take place over the Easter weekend.

    The work, mostly taking place across the West Midlands and Staffordshire, means passenger services will be disrupted.

    A spokesman said travellers were advised to check before setting out over Easter and, in some locations, after the break.

  11. NHS recruitment crisis at West Midlands hospitalspublished at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2016

    The BBC has found severe shortages of doctors and nurses in NHS hospitals across the West Midlands.

    Walsall Manor Hospital needs to find a further 59 doctors and has 177 vacancies for nursing staff, while Dudley Group needs 61 doctors and 83 nurses.

    Both trusts acknowledged there were national shortages of staff in key areas and said they formed an alliance last summer to tackle the issue and develop more sustainable services for patients. 

    Unions say poor workforce planning is to blame but the government says since 2010, more nurses and doctors are working in NHS wards.

    The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police is warning the "fast parcel system" that facilitates internet shopping is helping criminals smuggle guns into Britain. 

    David Thompson says the arrival of weapons using this method is becoming more common. 

    In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, external he said that once firearms were in the country, they could fall into terrorists' hands.
