    West Midlands Ambulance Service attending an industrial accident in Nechells where five men have died says "sadly, there was nothing that could be done to save the five men".

    They were working next to a structure that collapsed.

    "A sixth man was partially trapped by the falling concrete but had managed to get out from the rubble himself", a spokesperson said.

    He was treated for a broken leg before being taken to Heartlands Hospital.

    A specialist team of 10 is on the scene at a Hawkeswood Metal recycling plant lifting heavy structures and cutting equipment to recover bodies from the scene.

    The fire service said a large concrete structure containing metal had collapsed.

    Police, fire, ambulance and the Health and Safety Executive are all on site at the "serious incident in Nechells".

    Emergency crews were called at 8:45am.

    Here's West Midlands Fire Service on its operational priority: "[It's to] ensure that the bodies of those who have lost their lives are recovered in the most timely and safe way possible."

    Assistant Chief Fire Officer Gary Taylor said: "The scene is an extremely challenging one, involving significant tonnage of concrete and metal and a structure that is still unstable. We have an assertive recovery plan in place and expect this operation to take several hours."

    An investigation is under way after five men died in an industrial accident at a Nechells recycling plant.

    Det Supt Mark Payne, from West Midlands Force CID, said: "We are still in the very early stages of this investigation to determine exactly what happened this morning.

    "Sadly five people have lost their lives and we have several teams of specialist officers supporting their families at this time.

    "This has been a very traumatic incident for those who were at the industrial unit this morning and we will continue to work alongside the HSE and the other emergency services at the scene."

  11. Breaking news: Five men die at Nechells recycling plantpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 7 July 2016

    Five men have died after an accident at a recycling plant in Nechells, Birmingham.

    Officers were called to Hawkeswood Metal in Aston Church Road to reports that a wall had collapsed, West Midlands Police said.

    Emergency services attended but the men could not be saved and they were pronounced dead at the scene. 

    Another man has been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

    Crewe Alexandra could get up to £1m in a cash windfall if their former midfielder Ashley Westwood leaves Aston Villa for Burnley this summer.

    The Clarets, promoted to the Premier League, have been linked with a £6m swoop for the former Alex midfielder. 

    Crewe have a substantial sell-on clause, thought to be worth as much as 20% of any profit relegated Villa make on the player, who they signed for around £1m back in 2012.

    Budget airline Jet2.com say its move to Birmingham Airport will create hundreds of jobs.

    The company will be flying to 15 routes from the city next year and basing four aircraft in the region.

  16. HS2 campaigners warn of 'more cuts to come'published at 12:22 British Summer Time 7 July 2016

    Campaigners opposed to the High Speed 2 rail project claimed "there will be more cuts to come" after it was recommended that plans for a new station in Sheffield should be dropped.

    The first phase of the high-speed line, passing through Warwickshire, is expected to be completed by around 2026 and will reduce London to Birmingham rail journey times by 32 minutes.

    Joe Rukin, Kenilworth resident and campaign manager for Stop HS2, said: "This cut to the HS2 project is one in a long line of cuts, and it is certain there will be more cuts to come, but the irony is it is a vindication of all those who said any new high speed link should go into existing stations."

    Last month rail experts warned the project was "over-priced".
