    It's been a successful start for Team GB to the Paralympics in Rio - and it's got even better today.

    Halesowen pilot Helen Scott picked up gold in the women's B 1,000m time trial on day two, along with para-cyclist Sophie Thornhill.

    They clocked one minute 6.283 seconds - a Paralympic record - to beat Larissa Klaassen and pilot Haleigh Dolman from the Netherlands by 0.776secs.

    American Airlines said it was a  "difficult" decision to stop its service to New York's JFK airport from Birmigham 

    The decision was made after constant evaluation "maximising our fleet and profitability while matching customer demand," it said.

    The airline "remains committed" to serving the UK market offering up to 24 flghts a day from other UK airports.

    They'll also be working with Birmingham-based staff to offer open positions "if qualified and eligible".

    The favourite for the region's metro mayor is bound to be the former minister and current West Midlands MEP Sion Simon, named as Labour’s candidate in July. 

    So now we know the names in the frames at least so far as our main three Parliamentary parties are concerned.

    Between now and polling day next May, we can expect an intense debate not just about the policies and personalities of all the eventual candidates themselves, but also about the powers of the mayor role itself: too powerful, not powerful enough?

    Given that voters in Birmingham and Coventry have emphatically rejected earlier proposals for an executive mayor and that Stoke-on-Trent tried it only to reject it, the argument will no doubt be resurrected over whether or not the West Midlands needs an elected mayor at all.
