  2. Tribute to nine year old who died after suspected allergic reaction at Birmingham school published at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A school has paid tribute to a nine-year-old boy who collapsed and died following a suspected allergic reaction.

    The boy, whose name has not been revealed, was described by Birmingham's Al Hijrah School, external as a "very popular member of the class".

    The Bordesley Green school said it was in "great shock after the sudden death" and its "thoughts and prayers were with his family".

    A 14-year-old boy travelling on a train in Worcestershire has been rugby-tackled to the ground and punched, after he accidentally stepped on a man's dog , external , police say.

    The boy apologised to the dog owner as soon as he realised what he'd done, but the man became aggressive and assaulted him.

    British Transport Police are asking for help in tracing the man suspected of carrying out the attack on a train between Stourbridge Junction and Hagley at 08:35 on 9 January.

    A think tank claims a tenth of all Britain's Islamist terrorists come from a small area of the Midlands.

    The report by the Henry Jackson Society says terrorist convictions have doubled in the five years up to 2015 - with east Birmingham being a hotspot.

    It comes on the day that Ch Supt Matt Ward speaks out for the first time since being appointed as the new head of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism unit.

    I've asked him why there has been a larger proportion of convicted terrorists from Birmingham and the West Midlands.

    He said: "Countering terrorism is always going to be more than pursuing individual terrorists. It's about challenging radical ideologies, integrating communities.

    "In the West Midlands an incredible amount of time, effort and resource has gone into making sure we build those links."

    Pupils at a school in Birmingham are being offered counselling after a nine year old boy died. 

    He collapsed at the Al Hijrah School in Bordesley Green on Friday after suffering a suspected allergic reaction.

  6. Storm Doris: Tree that smashed through leisure centre to be lifted away by crane published at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A tree that crashed through the roof of a Smethwick leisure centre during Storm Doris will be lifted away by a giant crane on Thursday, according to a council.

    Harry Mitchell Leisure Centre will be closed on Thursday morning and afternoon but Sandwell Council hopes classes can be held as normal in the evening.

    The poplar tree, between 60 and 80 feet in height, caused "serious damage" when it came down from the neighbouring cricket club's site, according to the authority.

    Classes have continued to be held in the unaffected parts of the centre since the storm.

    The delay in removing the tree has been due to the wait to use a 160-tonne crane, ward councillor Richard Marshall says.

    Arsonists caused the fire that engulfed a van used by retired world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, police have said.

    The vehicle's window was smashed before arsonists poured accelerant inside, setting it alight at 03:30 on Sunday at the Park Regis Hotel in Broad Street, Birmingham.

    Mayweather was appearing in the city to meet fans as part of a tour.

    An eyewitness who filmed the damaged vehicle but did not wish to be named said: "He [Mayweather] was actually outside when the van was set on fire, then he ran back in.

    "There was panic inside the whole hotel. Nobody was allowed out of the hotel for a couple of hours. They had the whole hotel on lockdown.”

    Amateur and professional photographers from across the UK were invited to submit pictures for the Photography Show at the NEC near Birmingham, taking place this weekend.

    It is billed as one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe and last year attracted more than 30,000 visitors.

    This year, organisers invited people to submit photos for the People's Gallery based on the theme chaos and calm.

    Arsonists caused the fire that engulfed a van used by boxing star Floyd Mayweather, police say.

    It happened at 03:30 GMT on Sunday at the Park Regis Hotel in Broad Street.  

    Arsonists smashed the window of the vehicle, a people carrier, before pouring accelerant inside and setting it alight, according to West Midlands Police.

    Retired five-weight world champion Mayweather was appearing at the city's ICC, meeting fans as part of a tour.  

    Inquiries into the fire which caused extensive damage, police said, to a vehicle "belonging to a guest", are currently on-going, with officers examining CCTV from the area.

    A post-mortem examination into the death of a nine-year-old boy at a Birmingham school is due to take place either today or tomorrow.

    The pupil collapsed from a suspected allergic reaction at the Al Hijrah School in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, at about 14:20 on Friday.

    He died at nearby Heartlands Hospital.

    The police, school and city council are investigating the circumstances of the death.

  13. Man found with serious head injuries in West Bromwichpublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    A man has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of assault after police found a man with serious head injuries outside a nightclub in West Bromwich. 

    Officers found the 27-year-old victim outside the Bing Club in Victoria Street at about 02:30 GMT on Sunday.

    A doorman was also treated for minor injuries to his face.

  14. One in 10 convicted in UK of Islamist-related terrorism "from two Birmingham constituencies" published at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2017

    One in ten Islamist terrorists in the UK are from the Hall Green and Hodge Hill constituencies in Birmingham, according to a think tank. 

    The Henry Jackson Society looked at the backgrounds of 253 people convicted of Islamist-related terrorism in the UK since 1998 and said it found 39 were from the areas and wider city.
