    A man has been charged with murdering his 81-year-old mother in Sutton Coldfield.

    Police found her body when making, external a "safe and well check" at her home in Ebrook Road on Saturday amid concerns she had not been seen for some time.

    The West Midlands force said a 41-year-old man was detained at a property in the street that afternoon.

    Darren Hammond, of Ebrook Road, is due to appear before magistrates in Birmingham later.

    Police say they believe the dead woman to be his mother Beryl Hammond, although formal identification is yet to take place.

    We're now in the seventh week of bin strikes in Birmingham - and it could end up going on until Christmas.

    Birmingham City Council says it's working to remove a build-up of rubbish, with areas tackled under a three-week rotation.

    Among places set for these collections this week are Acocks Green, Moseley and Kings Heath, and Bartley Green (pictured).

    We are almost at the end of the first three-week cycle of our contingency plan to visit every household in the city and have made significant progress despite the escalation of Unite’s industrial action to three strikes of one-hour duration each day – the impact of which is far greater than the length of the action."

    Unite assistant general secretary, Howard Beckett, says he wants "the Birmingham public to understand that strike action is a last resort".

    He said: "We ask them to place themselves in the shoes of our members and ask them to call upon the council to resolve this dispute."

  3. Car crashes into treepublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 14 August 2017

    A man has been taken to hospital after the car he was driving hit a tree on Pershore Road in Birmingham.

    His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    Emergency services are at the scene near Edward Street.
