  1. Birmingham Labour MPs call on leader to end disputepublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 8 September 2017
    Breaking

    All nine of Birmingham's Labour MPs have signed a letter to the leader of Birmingham City Council expressing their dismay in the delay in settling the ongoing bins dispute.

    The letter describes the council as "an obstacle" to settling the dispute which started back in June and calls proposals to exclude the conciliation service ACAS from the next round of talks "inexplicable".

    The letter calls on John Clancy to end the dispute and that "all parties need as a matter of urgency to focus on the reaching of an agreement which is just and which ensures the provision of that high-quality service that the people of Birmingham are entitled to".

    A man's body discovered in Lozells this morning is being treated as "unexplained" by police.

    West Midlands Police says officers were called at about 07:30 after a man's body was found in Roslin Grove.

    The death is not thought to be suspicious and the man is yet to be identified.

    Warwickshire's cricketers will be relying on their batsmen, or the weather, to help them get something out of their relegation scrap with Somerset at Edgbaston.

    The Bears will resume the final day on 172 for six in their second innings needing 230 more runs for an unlikely victory.

    Somerset need just four wickets to claim a second Division One victory of the season.

    Yesterday Marcus Trescothick hit an unbeaten 119, giving Somerset hope of avoiding the drop this season.

  11. Men questioned on suspicion of terror offences after getting off flightpublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Two men continue to be questioned on suspicion of terrorism offences after they were arrested getting off a flight at Birmingham Airport yesterday.

    The Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command, arrested the men, aged 29 and 40 as they got off a flight from Istanbul in Turkey.

    The older man was taken to hospital for medical assessment, the Met said. The 29-year-old is in police custody in London.

  12. By-elections: Success for Labour, Greens and Conservativespublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Three council by-elections in Hednesford last night produced three different results.

    The Conservatives lost two seats on Cannock Chase District Council with the Green Party winning the by-election in Hednesford South., external

    Meanwhile, Labour took Hednesford Green Heath, external and the party's overall majority on the council increased from one seat to three as a result.

    However, the Staffordshire County Council by-election held at the same time in the same area saw the Tories narrowly hold the Hednesford and Rawnsley seat., external

    That result saw the Cannock council leader George Adamson just failing to regain his place on the county council.

    The Conservatives retain a large overall majority on the county council.

  13. Council services 'protected' as it bids for 2022 Commonwealth Gamespublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 8 September 2017

    Birmingham City Council is pledging not to cut important services as it seeks to fund the city's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    Birmingham got the nod ahead of Liverpool as the preferred bidder but it will have to find £170m towards the costs.
