    A man suffered a suspected leg injury after a tree fell on him near Evesham this morning in the high winds caused by Storm Eleanor.

    West Mercia Police says officers had been called to the A46 Cheltenham Road, Ashton under Hill, external at about 02:00 to reports of a tree blocking the carriageway.

    While there, they say another tree came down on the man, hurting him and he was taken to hospital.

    Roof felt has been blown off a property in the Shard End area of Birmingham this morning, with debris landing in a car park below.

    Emergency services were called to Heathway at 0:30 and West Midlands Police said the area had been cordoned off, but that no-one was hurt.

    It says the winds aren't expected to be as strong as overnight but could still cause transport delays and power cuts.

    New figures, external have shown Worcestershire's A&E departments had some of the worst waiting times of any emergency unit in the Midlands over Christmas and new year.

    On New Year's Eve alone there were nearly 50 cases of patients having to wait for more than an hour to be transferred from ambulances.

    Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust says it was under "considerable pressure" during the festive season and it's encouraging patients to consider alternatives to A&E.

    A laser display has lit up the skies of Telford over the last two nights, to mark the start of the town's 50th anniversary year.

    Seven beams, each up to 10 miles (16km) long, were shone from locations around the area, converging on the Wrekin.

    People have been encouraged to tweet their photos of the lasers, designed by artist Dal Badial from London, using the hashtag #TF50light.

    Warwickshire Fire Service says it happened yesterday morning at Barnacle House Farm, Barnacle near Coventry.

    It says the machinery was used to break into the pile of wood chippings to make sure the blaze was completely out.

    More than 1,900 homes and businesses are without power across the West Midlands, according to Western Power Distribution

    The company says the worst affected areas include Solihull and Marton Green, with almost 900 without electricity.

    A further 400 properties in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire are also without power.

    Plans to build nearly 28,000 homes in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme are to be discussed by councillors today., external

    It is claimed they could help create up to 17,000 new jobs.

    The area's two authorities are working together on the Local Plan because Newcastle-under-Lyme is struggling to build enough homes and the city is proposing that it can pick up the slack.

    If approved, the Local Plan will set out what can be built over the next decade in each area, and a public consultation would start in February.

    Playing for the second time in three days, Albion went ahead but saw Andy Carroll score twice for the Hammers to lift the visitors out of the Premier League relegation zone.

    Before the game, West Brom had asked for the visit to West Ham to be postponed and complained to the Premier League about their crowded fixture list.

    West Brom have not won any of their eight games since Pardew was appointed at the end of November.

    Almost 900 homes and businesses in the West Midlands are thought to be without electricity now after engineers worked through the night to restore power to many of those affected by Storm Eleanor.

    High winds brought down dozens of trees.

    Western Power Distribution said it hoped to restore supplies to many of the remaining homes by 11:00

    At its height, 2,000 properties in the region were affected overnight.

    But the new injury is thought to be very minor and he is expected to fit for the five one-day internationals which follow the Test series.

    West Midlands Railway warned of some disruption to Cross City services due to a tree on the line near Lichfield , externalthat had to be moved.

  18. Lanes open after overturned lorry clearedpublished at 07:59 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2018

    All lanes have reopened on the M5 northbound J5-6 after an HGV overturned in a crash.

    The carriageway near Droitwich was closed for several hours to allow emergency services to right the vehicle and clean up its spilt load.

    It was the second lorry to overturn on the M5 overnight, but it's unclear if the weather played a part.

    There's a full flood warning in place this morning on the River Severn, external just south of our area with the Environment Agency predicting a tide level of four metres on parts of it.

    The flood gates in New Street in Upton-upon-Severn were also closed last night (pictured).

    Storm Eleanor's also led to the agency issuing several lesser flood alerts for other parts of the region, external including in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Warwickshire.
