  2. Review of rubbish collections because of complaintspublished at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

    The waste and recycling service in Newcastle is going to be reviewed by the borough council, because of complaints.

    A new system was brought in 18 months ago, but the council says people are still having problems with their collections.

    Poor weather and reduced services over the festive season mean the bin lorries haven't been able to get to all streets, causing people to complain of rubbish blocking the roads.

    The authority said at one point there were around 45,000 outstanding collections and it is working to clear them.

    A task group will at how best to run the service in future.

    A cold weather alert, external has been issued for the West Midlands, warning of a prolonged period of low temperatures starting tomorrow until 18:00 on Tuesday 9 January.

    The Met Office said colder conditions would spread south across much of the country during Saturday, with widespread frosts expected during Sunday.

    The BBC's 'Ambulance' programme is going to follow West Midlands Ambulance Service again for its new series.

    The last series, which showed what the job is like for ambulance crews and call centre staff, attracted more than four million viewers a week.

    Camera crews have already started filming and were out with the ambulances all through December - one of the busiest months of the year.

    A Gospel singer from Coventry today launched a musical mission to create a special choir to perform in the lead up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding this May.

    Inspired by Prince Harry's work around mental health issues, Sandra Godley will audition amateur singers who are living with or have overcome mental and physical challenges.

    There could be a number of changes to the West Ham line-up to face Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup tomorrow, including a return to the team for former Shrewsbury-lad Joe Hart.

    The man who trained him as a youngster, former goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins, said he always knew Hart would make a name for himself and that his determination always stood out.

    The England international has made 14 appearances for the Hammers in the league this season, while on loan from Manchester City.

    He has been out of the first team since the defeat to Arsenal in the EFL Cup on 19 December.

    Overflowing dog poo bins around Whitchurch have been emptied this week, after complaints from people living nearby.

    Local residents said some of the bins hadn't been visited by Shropshire Council since last month's snow.

    The local authority says it has sent out contractors to clear up the mess.

    Crewe boss David Artell says the suspension of Perry Ng for four matches will not affect his transfer business this month.

    He is considering a move to add another defender and a midfielder to his squad.

  13. Emaciated night heron 'making good recovery'published at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

    An American breed of heron found underweight and emaciated is making a good recovery, a wildlife rescue centre says.

    The black crowned night heron, named Noddy, had been a popular sight at The Dingle in Shrewsbury's Quarry park, but in November visitors said they were concerned for his health.

    He was taken to Cuan Wildlife Rescue in Much Wenlock, external and the team there say he has now been moved to a bigger enclosure and is continuing to improve.

    Aston Villa are to welcome back captain John Terry for tomorrow's FA Cup third-round tie at home to Peterborough United.

    Manager Steve Bruce confirmed he'll start and said he was also going to take the opportunity to give some of the younger players a taste of first-team action.

  15. Mystery of meat cleaver which crossed the Atlanticpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

    A meat cleaver that turned up in a USA antiques store more than 100 years after it was presented as a prize to a Stoke-on-Trent market stall has been returned to Staffordshire.

    George Short from New Hampshire, who paid $100 for the cleaver, said he wanted to send it back to its rightful home.

    But the city council, which runs Longton Market, is hoping to shed some light on the cleaver's past and is especially keen to find out how it headed across the Atlantic.

    An inscription on the blade reads: "Presented by David Shemilt Esq for cleanest and best dressed stall of meat in Longton Market, awarded to Thomas Rushton, Fulford."

  16. Another temporary closure for maternity unitpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

    Oswestry's maternity unit will be closed again, from 20:00 on Sunday until 08:00 on Monday, because of staff sickness.

    It only reopened after a six-month closure last week and there are proposals to close it permanently as a place to give birth, along with the maternity units in Ludlow and Bridgnorth.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust said it had contacted all mothers due to give birth there, to explain the alternatives.

    Stoke City are working to bring in new signings and manager Mark Hughes says he thinks new faces can raise morale in the dressing room.

    Pressure is building on him following their drop into the Premier League's relegation zone, but having met with the chairman yesterday it seems Hughes has the support of Peter Coates.

    Stoke have been linked with the Fulham defender Ryan Fredericks, but BBC Radio Stoke has been told the club is in talks with an international midfielder.
