    Two men have had what rescuers are calling an "eye-opening experience" - after they had to be rescued from a snow-covered mountain.

    The pair, from Shropshire, plus a third climber from Wrexham, became trapped in a gully in Snowdonia.

    The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team says it took eight hours to find and bring them to safety, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    A UKIP MEP has told Sunday Politics that he would like to stand as the party's new leader, if Henry Bolton is sacked.

    UKIP's national executive committee passed a vote of no confidence in him last month.

    West Midlands member Bill Etheridge has previously said Mr Bolton should step down because of racist messages his former girlfriend sent about Meghan Markle.

    Party members will gather in Birmingham in 13 days to decide whether or not to continue with the leader, following the revelations.

  3. Men arrested after police officer dragged along by carpublished at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    Two men are in custody after a fight outside a nightclub.

    One police officer was dragged down the road in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, during the early hours, as the offenders attempted to make off in a red BMW, Staffordshire Police said. The officer luckily only suffered minor bruising.

    The car then hit a set of traffic lights and the men ran off before being arrested. A large quantity of cash and some drugs were recovered from the vehicle.

    A 30-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent was arrested on suspicion of assault actual bodily harm and possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

    The second man, a 31-year-old, also from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs, assault of a police officer, dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply.

  4. Robbie Williams backs hospice fundraiserpublished at 17:56 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    Singer Robbie Williams is one of a number of celebrities supporting a hospice fundraising appeal.

    The Donna Louise hospice in Trentham has started its One in a Million campaign today.

    It is hoped it will fund a new service to support young people over 19 suffering life-limiting conditions.

    A new promotion for the appeal includes celebrities like comedian Jo Brand, This is England actress Vicky McClure, and Stoke City's Peter Crouch.

    Liz Gratton from the trust says the new young adult unit will be transformational.

  6. Gritters ready for sub-zero temperaturespublished at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    Gritters will be out in force across the West Midlands, after forecasts of snow.

    Temperatures are set to drop to as low as -5C in some areas this week, and the Met Office forecasts a band of snow and ice to edge in from the north-west tomorrow morning.

    Telford and Wrekin Council says it be sending lorries out tonight and again at 04:00 on Tuesday.

    Staffordshire County Council says its 40-strong team of gritters and snow ploughs will also be rolling out this evening and into the night, and early tomorrow morning when needed.

    Birmingham Ladies will host the defending champions Manchester City Women in the next round of the Women's FA Cup.

  8. Woman injured in two-car crashpublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2018

    A woman has been taken to hospital after a crash near Kidderminster today.

    The collision involved two cars and happened just before 08:00 at the junction of the A449 and Caunsall Road in Cookley, Worcestershire.

    West Midlands Ambulance service said the 51-year-old patient suffered chest and shoulder pain and was taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.

    A council leader has said he will be stepping down from his position in May.

    Councillor Dave Conway, of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, previously said he says his deteriorating eyesight made it "too difficult to give the role my complete attention".

    Councillor Ann James, who's currently responsible for health and social care, will become the next leader of the City Independents.

    She'll then face a vote by councillors to become the leader of the coalition running the authority.

    Police say the cause of a fire at a derelict pub is currently unexplained.

    Officers from the West Mercia force say they are continuing investigations into the blaze at the Castle Inn, Old Coleham, Shrewsbury, shortly after 19:20 yesterday.

    The fire was extinguished and there are no reports of any injuries, but the building has been damaged as a result.

    The funeral of BBC radio presenter Ed Doolan has taken place this afternoon.

    Ed died last month at the age of 76 - having presented over 9,000 radio shows across the West Midlands for more than 40 years.

    Two protesters who were among 55 men arrested at a Sikh temple have denied that the demonstration was aimed at a mixed faith wedding.

    Brothers Gursharan Singh, 34, and Kulvinder Bir Singh, 38, deny committing religiously aggravated offences at a gurdwara in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, by grabbing an official's tie and removing a sign.

    At Birmingham Crown Court, the pair denied wrongdoing and claimed to have been protesting on September 11 2016 about alleged misuse of funds and "corruption" at the temple.

    In closing speeches to the jury, counsel for the defendants said there was no evidence the protesters knew the wedding was taking place.

    The trial continues.

    A suspect remains detained under the Mental Heath Act, following a fatal stabbing at a Birmingham bookmakers.

    Khalid Yousef, 28, from Handsworth was pronounced dead at the scene on Rookery Road, Handsworth on 4 January at 12:45.

    Police arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of murder and he remains under detention.

    Investigations are continuing.

    A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man at his home in Kettering.

    Tairu Jallow, 29, was fatally stabbed at the property in Havelock Street on 14 January.

    Clever Makande, 23, of Brandwood Crescent, Kings Norton, Birmingham, was remanded in custody after appearing at Northampton Magistrates' Court on Monday.

    He will next appear at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday.

    A 29-year-old man from Birmingham and a 31-year-old man from Nottingham remain in custody on suspicion of murder.

    Two loaded handguns have been seized by police during a crackdown on organised crime in Birmingham.

    A 17-year-old girl from Newtown was arrested and charged with possessing a hand gun and ammunition and will next appear at court on 21 February.

    A 16-year-old boy from Winson Green was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and bailed while enquiries progress.

    Parents have raised concerns after notices showing "opening hours" were put on toilet doors.

    Signs giving a 10-minute window have been slammed by parents of pupils at Sir William Stanier school in Crewe.

    Father Neil Bickerton said he's worried the times will distract his son from learning.

    But the school says the signs are meant to indicate that children can use the facilities during break and lunchtime and during lesson changes. At other times they need a pass.
