    A man's been found guilty of killing another man at a Birmingham tram stop.

    Anthony Banting, 57, died after suffering multiple stab wounds in Handsworth last March.

    Alaeldien Ahmed, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, has been found guilty of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

    The 26-year-old, from Eva Road, Winson Green, was cleared of murder and will be sentenced at a later date.

    Speaking after today's verdict, Heath Westerman from the Crown Prosecution Service said Wallis and Ellis had killed Dionne Clarke after an argument.

    He said they had "attacked, sprayed ammonia in her eyes, tied and gagged her and then left her to die".

    "They then tried to cover up their crime with the help of Wallis’s parents," Mr Westerman said.

    “Today these defendants have all been found guilty for their part in Ms Clarke’s death and they will now have to deal with the consequences of their actions."

    A couple have been found guilty of murdering a woman from Nuneaton.

    Dionne Clarke, 27, was found dead with 69 injuries at a house on Cornish Close, Nuneaton, in June of last year.

    Dominic Wallis, 28, of Dryden Close, Galley Common, Nuneaton and 20-year-old Elizabeth Ellis of Skey Drive in the town were convicted of killing her at Birmingham Crown Court.

    Wallis's parents, Karen Kingsley Wallis, also of Dryden Close, were both found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

    A "highly manipulative" paedophile, described as one of the UK's worst, fitted secret cameras in a public toilets, as well as his parents' house for "sexual gratification" a court's heard.

    Matthew Falder, 29, of Edgbaston, Birmingham, admitted 137 charges at crown court in October, including encouraging the rape of a four-year-old boy.

    On the second day of a sentencing hearing, Birmingham Crown Court heard how the "predatory, serial offender" blackmailed "vulnerable" victims, over a period of eight years.

    Falder distributed the images on websites known to be associated with paedophiles and those interested in "hurtcore", material which depicts rape and abuse.

    The sentencing hearing continues.

    The death of a woman pulled from a canal near Stafford on Tuesday is not being treated as suspicious, Staffordshire Police have said.

    They were called to a spot near Mill Lane in Great Haywood following reports of a woman in the water.

    She was taken to hospital, but later died.

    Archaeologists digging at a secret location in Shropshire say they believe a large Saxon hall or palace was built there, dating back to the time of King Offa, and that it was a "very high status site".

    The dig leader, Roger White from Birmingham University, believes it was one of only 10 of that size in the country and appears to have been inhabited for some time.

    The site, dating back to the 8th Century, has been known about since 1975, but is protected and this is the first time it has been examined by archaeologists.

    Mr White said the state of the clay there suggested it had burnt down and he wants to have the remains carbon dated, to get a more exact age.

    Shropshire's two acute hospitals are now the worst in the country when it comes to meeting the government's target of waiting less than four hours for accident and emergency treatment.

    The latest figures, covering 133 NHS trusts, show a third of patients visiting A&E at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust now having to wait more than that.

    The trust is struggling to recruit enough consultants. Contingency plans to temporarily close Telford's A & E overnight, unless the situation improves, have been passed at a meeting today.

    Hospital chief executive Simon Wright told a board meeting this afternoon that at the busiest times the hospitals have seen an extra 105 patients needing beds - that’s equivalent to an extra five wards.

    A further 101 Carillion workers have lost their jobs bringing the total number of redundancies at the collapsed Wolverhampton firm to 930 to date.

    The Official Receiver said it had safeguarded a further 1,221 jobs today to bring the total to 2,250.

    A spokesperson said: "We continue to engage with staff, elected employee representatives and unions throughout.

    "Those who have lost their jobs will be able to find support through Jobcentre Plus’ Rapid Response Service and are also entitled to make a claim for statutory redundancy payments."
