  1. Arrest after 'rooftop siege'published at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    A 40-year-old man from Tamworth has been arrested after what Staffordshire Police are calling a "two-hour rooftop siege" in the town yesterday afternoon.

    The force said during the stand-off, tiles were ripped up and thrown from the roof of a house in Alfred Street on to the road below.

    The street was cordoned off and neighbouring properties were evacuated, with occupants sent to a nearby boxing club while officers attended the incident.

    Police said the arrested man remained in custody.

    It's a private investigation team that is searching for Nicola Payne at Coombe Abbey Country Park, Warwickshire.

    A number of items have already been recovered, but nothing "significant", says Peter Faulding from Specialist Group International.

    He said: "It is now about looking for evidence, looking for evidence relating to Nicola’s disappearance, so perhaps something connected to her, something she had with her, as well as, of course, crucially looking for Nicola."

    Precinct shopping in Coventry during the city's post-war years is to be celebrated in an exhibition as part of a major arts festival.

    The exhibition is curated by Photo Archive Miners, external, a Coventry group, and is part of the Shop Front Festival;, external the city's first significant arts event since winning City of Culture 2021 status.

    The photographs were taken by Coventry City Council architects and renowned photographer Richard Sadler and document changes in the city during the 1950's.

    The exhibition runs from 15 to 31 March at Artspace Arcadia Gallery in the City Arcade.

    Managers at the hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford are hoping the chancellor's spring statement will contain news of funding for a reorganisation of services in the county.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust wants consultation on plans for an overhaul that would cost about £300m, but the consultation can't move forward until it knows there is money to make it happen.

    The plan would involve some of Telford's accident and emergency department, plus women and chldren's services, moving to Shrewsbury; while planned care would move in the opposite direction.

  8. 'I was raped by multiple men'published at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2018

    A woman told the Victoria Derbyshire programme earlier she was raped by multiple men in Telford.

    She spoke following a Sunday Mirror investigation which claimed hundreds of girls were abused in the town, dating back to the 1980s.

    The woman, who appeared anonymously, said she was the victim of a grooming gang and was first abused at the age of 14 and had two abortions.

    She said her phone number was sold by boys her own age to older men, who bombarded her with calls.

    Telford MP Lucy Allan has called for an independent inquiry.

    Britain's Menna Fitzpatrick and guide Jen Kehoe from Stoke-on-Trent claimed a Winter Paralympic silver medal in the women's visually impaired super combined event.

    The pair were second after the super G run and despite a storming slalom effort they were unable to get the better of Slovakia's Henrieta Farkasova and guide Natalia Subrtova, who were winning their third gold medal.

    Fitzpatrick, 19, was born with congenital retinal folds and has no vision in her left eye and limited sight in her right, but started skiing aged five.

    Efforts to investigate the nerve agent attack in Salisbury are being bolstered by West Midlands Police, it's been confirmed.

    Police and Army activity continues in the area, with a Sainsbury's car park becoming the latest site to be sealed off in the city.

    Prime minister Theresa May said it was "highly likely" Russia was responsible for the attack on the Russian former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

    The Avon and Somerset force is also among those lending its support to the investigation, along with Welsh police.

    It was left on an East of England Ambulance, external attending a call in Thetford, Norfolk, on Monday.

    "You're amazing and worth your weight in gold," the note says.

    An angry note left last month on an ambulance in Stoke-on-Trent ordering paramedics to move their vehicle prompted a backlash on social media, and the woman who posted the note was fined for her actions.

    Flood warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency, external across the region, with roads in Warwickshire and Worcestershire already affected.

    The alerts cover the length of the Severn through Worcestshire.
