    A yellow weather warning for snow and ice, external has been extended across the West Midlands.

    While ice is expected to be the most widespread hazard, snow is likely in places too, the Met Office says.

    Freezing fog patches are also likely to persist and may prove an additional hazard.

    The warning is in place from 14:00 today until midday on Friday.

    Clap for Carers is to return under a new name of Clap for Heroes, the initiative's founder has said.

    The weekly applause for front-line NHS staff and other key workers ran for 10 weeks during the UK's first coronavirus lockdown last spring.

    Founder Annemarie Plas tweeted that it would return at 20:00 GMT on Thursday.

    She said she hoped the initiative would "lift the spirit of all of us" including "all who are pushing through this difficult time".

    Thousands of school pupils and teachers across the Midlands are waiting for a statement from the education secretary today to outline plans to replace cancelled GCSE and A-Level exams.

    Gavin Williamson, who is also the MP for South Staffordshire, is expected to speak in the House of Commons later.

    The decision to cancel exams for the second consecutive academic year was confirmed on Monday after many children had attended the first day of term.

    Tom Bell, an A-Level student in the West Midlands, said he and fellow students have mixed feelings on the decision.

    "There is a sense of a kind of relief because obviously we have not been in college for a good six months after this February half-term," he said.

    "You feel like we have not had the same level of knowledge given to us as previous years would have but obviously there is a sense of disappointment for people."

    A volunteer group is hoping to "bring a bit of joy" by giving presents to children in struggling families who have birthdays during the new lockdown.

    Lucie Dennis said their families would get hampers, which include essential items, alongside presents.

    "I think sadly, some families will be facing new struggles," she said. "Money worries they will have not had before.They may be waiting for benefits to kick in, or they may have lost their income suddenly."

    The mother-of-three set up the Help To Make Tummies Full group after being inspired by footballer Mark Rashford's food poverty campaign.

    The group provided 500 Christmas hampers after a "phenomenal" response, she said.
