    Officers searching for a missing man have found a body in Sutton Coldfield.

    The body is yet to be formally identified, but believed to be that of missing 79-year-old John Firkins.

    West Midlands Police tweeted, external that his family were being supported by specialist officers.

    A school is to create a special award in memory of a pupil who died days after getting into difficulty in the sea.

    The 16-year-old, named locally as Blake Ward from Dudley, got into difficulty of the coast of Gwynedd last week.

    April Garratt, the head teacher of Hillcrest Secondary School in Dudley, where Blake was a pupil, said he was a "wonderful young man" and his teachers would have described him as "caring, kind-hearted, thoughtful and funny".

    "We're also making donations to the fund that's opened for Blake's family," she said.

    Floral tributes have been left at the school.

    A farmer says he's been forced to put up cameras and alarms and a neighbour has employed security guards to try and fight the rise in rural crime.

    It comes as NFU Mutual says the cost of the crime's risen to £44.5m as organised criminal gangs target farm machinery.

    Matthew Brewster and his wife Jackie farm near Stafford and live with their four-year-old daughter there.

    They say they've had thieves steal power tools, trailers, tractor parts and fuel.

    It comes after the Potters' first match after relegation to the second flight resulted in a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United.

    Stoke were second best as the home side's intensity and pressing put them on the back foot.

    Swimmer Adam Peaty says his coach "keeping me humble" led to him breaking his own 100m breaststroke world record in the European Championships.

    The 23-year-old Olympic and world champion, from Uttoxeter, finished in 57.00 seconds - 0.13secs quicker than his previous best time.

    Afterwards, he spoke about bouncing back from the disappointment of the Commonwealth Games, when he lost in the 50m and was an underwhelming winner in the 100m breaststroke.

    A man's appeared before magistrates this morning charged with the murder of 28-year-old midwife Samantha Eastwood.

    Michael Stirling, 32, from Gratton Road, Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent, appeared at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

    He was remanded into custody to appear next at Stafford Crown Court on 8 August.

    Police say it happened near the Old Post Office in Bucknell, Shropshire, just after midnight.

    They say the woman in her 50s was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with serious head and chest injuries.

  14. Woman dies in horse-drawn carriage crashpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 6 August 2018

    A woman has died and a man been seriously injured following a crash involving a horse-drawn carriage near Stone in Staffordshire.

    Emergency services were called to Uttoxeter Road at Hilderstone shortly after 13:00 yesterday.

    The carriage, which was being pulled by a single horse, was travelling towards Stone when it crashed.

    A 60-year-old woman, who was a passenger, was airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital but died shortly after. The 55-year-old carriage driver suffered serious leg injuries.

    A six-year-old girl, who dialled 999 when she found her mother unconscious has received a special award from Staffordshire Police.

    Ruby Walters made the emergency call when her mum Faye became unwell at their home in Stafford in June.

    Police say Ruby demonstrated outstanding bravery and showed maturity beyond her years.

    Her mother says she's extremely proud.
