Railway timetables introduced to help train drivers cope with leaves on the line are set to start later this month, external.

The problem, often seen as something of a national joke, causes "slippery rails" and makes it more difficult for drivers to safely brake, without overshooting platforms, and pull away from stations, Network Rail said.

West Midlands Railway said its "leaf fall" timetable would run from 15 October to 7 December, with many other operators expected to follow suit.

To avoid lengthy delays, less popular stations are set to be missed out on some services, particularly during peak times.

In 2015, West Midlands Railway's predecessor London Midland was forced to reinstate services to some stations after a backlash from passengers.

Every year thousands of tonnes of leaves fall on to tracks, Network Rail says, which are then compressed as trains pass, creating slippery conditions.

It said signals can also be affected as they rely on electric currents in the track to locate trains, but leaves can interrupt "the connection between the rail and the track".

As a result, Network Rail said it needed to allow longer gaps between trains.
