    A permanent memorial to the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings is to be placed at New Street Station.

    Two bombs exploded in the city centre in 1974, killing 21 people.

    A grove of trees with stainless steel leaves will be created, featuring the names of all the victims.

    Artist Anuradha Patel describes the sculpture as an "oasis in an urban jungle".

    It will be unveiled next week.

    Members of the public are being invited to share opinions on the designs, external for three new railway stations in Birmingham.

    People can have their say at a series of exhibitions showcasing the initial designs for the planned stations at Moseley, Kings Heath and Hazelwell or by taking part in an online survey.

    Under the proposals, the Camp Hill line would reopen to passenger services for the first time since World War Two.

    Feedback from residents and commuters would help shape the final designs ahead of them being submitted to Birmingham City Council for planning permission, West Midlands Combined Authority, external said.

    It added it expected construction work could start in 2020, with a view to getting the stations open by the end of 2021.

    The first drop-in session is on Monday at The Hub, Hazelwell.

    Ten major shopping areas in Birmingham are set to be transformed over the coming years, the city council, external says.

    It has declared the projects are worth more than £2bn in potential investment.

    The outer city areas were identified in a new vision passed by cabinet on Tuesday.

    They include Sutton Coldfield, Perry Barr, Bordesley Green, Coventry Road, Stechford, Meadway, Erdington, Northfield, Stirchley and Alum Rock Road.

    The "urban centres framework" will "guide investment and development decisions" in future years, according to the council which says it will also be used to secure funding from various sources including the government, local enterprise partnerships, West Midlands Combined Authority and developers.

    With the cold weather approaching, Telford and Wrekin Council is starting to recruit snow warden volunteers to keep footpaths and other important sites clear this winter.

  10. Community effort to revamp hospital homes for A&E doctorspublished at 18:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2018

    Work starts this week on refurbishing three houses at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford to accommodate A&E doctors.

    The emergency unit is set to close overnight temporarily from 5 December, due to staff shortages, particularly middle-grade doctors and specialist nurses.

    However, in a bid to boost recruitment, Telford and Wrekin Council proposed a community-led effort to refurbish properties on the site, with the aim of renting them out for free as an incentive for new doctors.

    Council leader Shaun Davies has previously called for tradespeople to help refurbish the three homes in a DIY SOS-style plan.

    Since then, about 20 individuals and organisations have offered their services, labour or expertise for free, or offered to make a donation.

    European champion Laura Muir has confirmed she'll be returning to the West Midlands to compete in the Muller Indoor Grand Prix, external next year.

    The event at Arena Birmingham in February is one of the major dates in the international indoor athletics calendar.

    Muir won European Championship gold at 1500m, World Indoor silver (1500m) and bronze (3000m), as well as the Diamond League 1500m crown.

    Her outstanding season in 2018 began with the two medals at the indoor championships at the Birmingham venue.

    This portrait, by Warwickshire artist Darren Baker, was commissioned by the Prince's Trust and is due to be put on show tomorrow.

    It was painted to mark his 70th birthday and features thousands of brush strokes - to represent those helped by the Prince's Trust.

    Darren, who lives in Barnacle, near Coventry, painted the Queen's official portrait back in 2011 and has been asked to do a number of other royal paintings.

    A husband and wife have been fined £1,250 plus costs for having an overgrown and untidy garden.

    Glenville Charles Davies and Marion Kathleen Davies were fined for the state of the property they own in Wellington, Telford and Wrekin Council said.

    It is the second time in the last three years that a prosecution has been brought against them for the same offence, the council said.

    Mr Davies, who was present at Telford Magistrates' Court was fined £500, while his wife, who did not attend, was fined £750.

    Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, external is celebrating coming top of a National Centre for Diversity, external poll of NHS trusts.

    The National Centre for Diversity recently carried out a survey of 41 NHS organisations at board level.

    The Coventry and Warwickshire trust was found to be top for understanding and delivering on equality, diversity and inclusion in their organisation.
