More than 400 parents have signed a petition over a primary school's teaching about LGBT rights and homophobia.

Some parents of children at Parkfield Community School, in Birmingham, have protested over the teachings they say contradict their Islamic faith and are not suitable for young children.

The petition, which has now amassed more than 420 signatures, is to be sent to the area's local MPs and school governors.

The school says its "No Outsiders" programme is aimed at educating children so they are able to accept differences in society.

Assistant head teacher Andrew Moffat said previously his scheme is "about being different and being friends".

    Quote Message

We just ask that children are taught about these topics when the time is right, when they are at secondary school

    Fatima Shah, Parent

Fatima Shah, who organised the petition, said: "We have no problem with the teaching of the Equality Act but what we are asking for as parents, is to be able to teach our own children about sex and relationships.

"Teaching a child of five years old about homosexuality is not appropriate. We just ask that children are taught about these topics when the time is right, when they are at secondary school."

A community meeting is being held by parents on Sunday.

  16. Student rape threat victim 'questioned over sexual history'published at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2019

A woman who was the subject of rape threats in a group chat involving two students who are being allowed back to study at the University of Warwick says she faced "aggressive" questions about her sexual history with the men during the investigation.

The university said it had reduced the length of the men's bans from 10 years to one after they appealed.

Speaking to the BBC Victoria Derbyshire programme, the female student said she was made to feel she had to justify feeling upset by the rape threats.

"The way were were questioned was very accusatory," she said.

"We were given a list of male individuals involved and we were taken through it one by one and asked our sexual history with each of them, which obviously was really traumatic not having anyone really there to represent me.

"I didn't know if I was supposed to be answering these kind of questions and it was really upsetting."

The university said it stood by its investigation process and those interviewed were asked about whether there were prior or existing relationships with those involved in writing messages, but the "detail of any relationship was neither questioned or explored".

  19. Rescued hedgehog starts to grow back spinespublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2019

A hedgehog that was found in a Telford garden with most of his spikes missing is recovering well and one of them might have started to grow back.

The Cuan Wildlife Rescue Centre, in Much Wenlock, has named him Bear and staff say they probably fell out because of stress brought on by an ear mite infestation - so they have been giving him daily massages.

The centre said he was now eating well and was returning to normal hedgehog behaviour, such as sleeping during the day and being active at night.

And while the spines may take months to grow back, the ear mites have gone.
