    Birmingham Yardley MP Jess Phillips has called on the prime minister to "do a brave thing" and vote against a no-deal Brexit.

    Speaking in a Brexit debate at the House of Commons, she said she felt "so enraged with the complete and utter lack of bravery to do the right thing for our country".

    Gesturing towards her fellow MPs she asked Theresa May to "do once what is best for the country, not what is best for any of us".

    Shabana Mahmood, Labour MP for Birmingham Ladywood, said: "Our communities need assurances that measures are being put in place to work with local communities to prevent any further appalling incidents from happening.

    "The rising violent crime, and particularly knife crime, we have seen in recent weeks and months across Birmingham is extremely concerning."

    The people in charge of Birmingham's roads have apologised after a blocked gully caused severe congestion in this morning's rush hour.

    Tailbacks of three-miles long were reported after Amey was forced to close the Holloway underpass in the city centre.

    "Unexpected blockages" to the drainage system found during overnight work caused localised flooding within the tunnel, the firm said.

    "We recognise the time taken to resolve the situation and reopen the road was unacceptable," it said, adding it was working to make sure it doesn't happen again.

    Further work on the tunnel is expected this evening.

    Two people have been charged with murdering a woman who has been missing since 2013.

    The pair have also been charged with preventing her lawful burial and fraudulently claiming her benefits payments.

    Lisa Bennett, 39, from Burton-upon-Trent, but believed to have been living in Selly Oak, was reported missing by her mother in May 2013.

    Kevin Flanagan, 39, of Redbrook Covert, Kings Norton, and 40-year-old Kathleen Salmond, of Farnhurst Road, Hodge Hill, both face three charges of murder, fraud and preventing burial.

    At Birmingham Crown Court today they were bailed and a provisional trial date set of 2 September.

    A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the back and chest in a Birmingham park, an inquest has heard.

    Abdullah Muhammad was found in Sara Park, Small Heath, at about 20:00 on 20 February and died at the scene.

    A post-mortem examination found that the student, of Lindale Avenue, Hodgehill, died as a result of an assault.

    The inquest was adjourned by Birmingham area coroner Emma Brown until the outcome of the criminal investigation.

    The arrest of a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of murder, following the death of a 17-year-old in Birmingham is a "significant step forward" in the investigation, said police.

    The teenager is being questioned over Hazrat Umar's death in Bordesley Green on Monday.

    Det Ch Sup Mark Payne described the stabbing, the third in the city in nearly two weeks, as a "senseless act" and issued a plea for parents to have "heart-to-heart" conversations with children "in an attempt to steer them away from knives".

    “Knife crime and violence is not an issue we can tackle on our own," he said. "We need help from partners, parents, schools and the wider community to tackle this growing issue."

    Police were called to Norwood Road in Bordesley Green at about 14:00 on Monday and found 17-year-old Hazrat Umar with serious stab injures. He died at the scene.

    A 16-year-old from Birmingham remains in police custody for questioning as part of the investigation, said West Midlands Police.

    There's heavy congestion in Birmingham city centre as a blocked gully has closed the underpass at Holloway Circus.

    Congestion is back to Bournbrook Fire Station traffic lights and all the way up the Bristol Road.

    A diversion is sending all traffic around the Pagoda island.

    Three miles of queuing traffic is being reported in the area.

    Officers say they're speaking to witnesses and identifying CCTV after a teenager was stabbed to death in Birmingham on Wednesday.

    It comes five days after 16-year-old Abdullah Muhammad was discovered fatally wounded near a park in Small Heath.

    Another teenager, Mohammed Sidali, also 16, died in hospital on 15 February after being attacked outside a college in Highgate.

    In a tweet, Shabana Mahmood, MP for Birmingham Ladywood, said she was "saddened" to hear about the death and was in contact with West Midlands Police.

    "My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the young victim's family at this terrible time," she said.

    A new operator is to start running regular steam train services in the West Midlands.

    Vintage Trains is one of a handful of companies to be given permission to run the locomotives on the West Coast mainline.

    Their flagship engine, Clun Castle, has just finished it's major restoration since it last ran in 1988.

    One of the men who helped build the locomotive in the 1950s will travel on the engine today as it runs from the depot at Tyseley in Birmingham, through the North Warwickshire line and back via Hatton and Dorridge.

    Police were called to Norwood Road in Bordesley Green at about 14:00 on Monday and found the 17-year-old boy with serious injures. He died at the scene.

    Nazir Afzal, the former chief prosecutor in Greater Manchester who oversaw the Rochdale child sex abuse case, said the victim was one of his relatives.
