    The Health and Safety Executive is to begin a full investigation after a man was seriously injured when a wall collapsed inside an old factory in Birmingham.

    The wall, in Vittoria Street in the Jewellery Quarter, came down just before 18:00 on Wednesday.

    Another person was taken to hospital with minor injuries and one person was discharged at the scene, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    The Grade II-listed building, built in 1866, was a former munitions factory that once supplied European and US troops during World War One and produced more than one million rifles, Birmingham Conservation Trust said.

    The grounds of Shrewsbury Castle are going to be scanned on Thursday to help archaeologists learn more about the buildings that once stood inside the inner bailey.

    The examinations will be carried out with ground-penetrating radar and and is expected to take two days.

    The castle grounds have never been excavated and 2019 marks the 950th anniversary of its first appearance in the history books, when it resisted an attack from Edric the Wild.

    The Castle Studies Trust, external awarded a grant of £9,500 to allow the scan to be carried out, and for an excavation at some point in the future.

    The school's not currently financially sustainable, Staffordshire County Council said.

    Its cabinet will consider on 15 May whether it should close at the end of August.

    Shropshire Council is considering spending £8.5m to convert almost 16,000 streetlights to LED bulbs.

    The Conservative leader of the authority, Peter Nutting, said the work will take three years to completef and will save £1.2m a year.

    Mr Nutting said 70% of that money will come from an interest free loan from Salix Finance and the proposals will be considered by the council's cabinet in September.

    Since 2013, the council has converted more than 3,300 street lights he added.

    Parking permit schemes have been set up for two Coventry streets, after residents complained about students parking there.

    People living on John Grace Street and Hermits Croft in Cheylesmore have been campaigning for something like this for more than two years and delivered a petition calling for action.

    Signs and yellow lines were also put in place to stop students and workers on nearby buildings from using the streets.

    West Midlands Police has been given an extra £7.6m by the government to tackle serious violence.

    The Home Office has today revealed how it's distributed the last of a £100m fund it announced in March after a rise in violent crime. , external

    Home Secretary Sajid Javid said he wanted the police forces to take "urgent action" such as having more officers on duty in the worst-affected areas.

    It comes after shootings in Wolverhampton and Birmingham this week and a string of stabbings since January in the West Midlands area.

    The latest Office of National Statistics figures show West Midlands Police recorded 24 gun offences per 100,000 residents in the force area in 2017-2018, external, more than double the average for England and Wales.

    Staffordshire Police said they received reports yesterday evening a 14-year-old boy had been injured in a collision on Berwick Road, Sneyd Green.

    The victim was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

    Officers said a 46-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent's in custody after being arrested at his home.

  18. Health body agrees to press ahead with merger planpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 8 May 2019

    Members of Shropshire's Clinical Commissioning Group have agreed to support a merger with their counterparts in Telford.

    The health body, which was £28.7m in debt at the end of last financial year could merge in April next year, if their counterparts at Telford and Wrekin CCG agree.

    A woman's in a critical condition in hospital and a toddler's been hurt in a crash involving two cars., external

    The collision on Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, saw both vehicles badly damaged, the ambulance service said.

    The woman was cut free by the fire service, treated for very serious injuries and then taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

    Paramedics said bystanders freed the toddler from the car before they arrived and she was treated for injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

    A second woman was cut free from the other vehicle and she and the youngster were also taken to hospital.
