While Shropshire councillors have voted in favour of declaring a "climate change emergency", there was a reluctance to set a firm date for becoming a carbon neutral authority and one councillor suggested the threat was exaggerated.
Councillor Ed Bird (below, left), the Conservative member for Shifnal South and Cosford, said: “Like many things I don’t think climate change is as bad as is being made out,” and he questioned whether it was really a priority for people in the county.
The Conservative leader of the council, Peter Nutting (above, left), also had concerns, saying: "We are making so much progress but what I do not want to do is put undue pressure and targets on us by setting dates that are even more ambitious than those suggested by scientists.”
But Julian Dean, leader of the Green Party group said, “If you are not frightened, you are not paying attention" and added, “there are opportunities now. If we get it right we can make a difference. We can do rapid transitions. We have to.”
About 100 climate change protesters gathered outside the council's Shirehall, to call on the authority to take action.

A Telford teenager has been giving evidence against three men accused of sexually abusing her, when she was 15.
Ayad Abdulla Hizam, Ghamer Sulayman and Saleh Qasem, all from Birmingham, deny 20 charges between them.
The girl said she was forced to have sex with Mr Sullayman and numerous other men against her wishes.
She claimed that in one instance, after being picked up from her home by Mr Sullayman and Mr Qasem, she was taken to an address in Birmingham and forced to stay the night.
The teenager was given an unidentified liquid to drink - after which she felt dizzy. She says she was then raped by Mr Sullayman and a another man she didn't recognise.
The trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court continues.
A new leader of Rugby Borough Council has been elected, following local elections earlier this month.
Councillor Seb Lowe, who represents Coton And Broughton Ward, was elected at the Annual General Meeting held earlier today.

A village primary school with 38 pupils is set to close later this year, because of funding difficulties.
The Shropshire Hills Federation, which runs Stiperstones Church of England School and two other schools, says most of the children will be moved to Norbury, seven miles away, and will be offered a free minibus.
Shropshire councillors are being asked to approve the move and if they agree, it could shut later this year.
It's not known what will happen to the school building, which is held in an educational trust.
Quote MessageThe federation leaders are clear that children have only one opportunity at education and deserve excellence and that without making cuts to current provision, it would not be possible for education to remain as it is now.”

The new leader of Warwick District Council has reached out to opposition parties in the hope they can work together on issues including poor air quality and the loss of the open countryside.
Conservative councillor Andrew Day was elected at Wednesday's annual meeting of the council. He takes over from Andrew Mobbs, who lost his seat at the local elections at the start of the month.
The Conservatives only managed to stay in power by forming an alliance with the three Whitnash Residents Association councillors to take their combined number of seats to 22 – the same as the number held by the opposition group made up of the Lib Dems, Greens and Labour, but the Tory chairman will have the casting vote.
“I want to work with the other group leaders on an improved and more collaborative form of government and that is clearly something our residents want too,” Mr Day said.
