More than 76,000 people applied for tickets to attend the Peaky Blinders premiere this evening - nearly double the number who applied to go to the premiere of the previous series in 2017.

Sadly, plenty will be feeling a little disappointed tonight. Fewer than 1,000 tickets were available.

Caryn Mandabach, executive producer, said: "Peaky Blinders is a love letter to Birmingham, so we’re thrilled that the feeling is mutual."

Peaky Blinders is the BAFTA-winning gangster drama set on the 1920s Birmingham streets.

It first aired in 2013 and featured a 1919 crew - complete with razor blades sewn into the peaks of their caps - led by fierce boss, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy).

Since the debut, we've seen the Shelby family expand its criminal organisation while coping with the social and political events of the era, including the general strike of 1926.

The last series - season four - ended with Shelby becoming an MP, cementing the clan’s position of power.

Series five will find the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929 and the new MP being approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain.
