    The New Saints football will earn just over £250,000 from their Champions League first round qualifying match and the club says it needs the money if it's going to continue to improve.

    The Oswestry-based team go into tonight's second leg in Kosovo tied 2-2 with Feronikeli and if they advance to the second qualifying round they will earn another £340,000.

    Last season TNS earned more than £900,000, from their European run and managing director Ian Williams said it was important the money was invested wisely, so that they can keep winning in the Welsh league and returning to Europe.

    The match kicks off at 7.45pm.

    A grass bank outside Solihull station has been transformed into a wildflower meadow.

    Similar strips have been sown in other parts of the borough, which the council hopes will provide a valuable habitat for butterflies and bees.

    There's been a long-running campaign encouraging councils to let neatly-mown grass verges become mini meadows where wildflowers and wildlife can flourish appears to be building up a head of steam.

    Seeds for the council's Wildlife Ways project were provided by Pictorial Meadows, which was previously involved in displays at the Olympic Park during London 2012.

  4. Man injured when car goes into roadside vergepublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    A driver was injured when his car went into a roadside verge, ending up in a hedge.

    The crash happened on Monday afternoon on Tillington Road, between Tillington and Burghill in Herefordshire.

    The road was closed for a time for the air ambulance to attend the scene.

    Police are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

  6. 'Keep away from escaped boa constrictor' RSPCA saypublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    A boa constrictor has gone missing from its home and the RSPCA is advising people to keep a safe distance if they see it.

    The 6ft snake was last seen at its home in Melrose Avenue, Stafford, on Sunday.

    Anyone who spots the snake is being asked to call the RSPCA so they can safely recover it.

    Snake owners are reminded they are "extremely good escape artists" that will "take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure, or loose-fitting lid."

    There are too many children waiting to be assessed for autism in Shropshire, health commissioners says.

    A report says there are 320 on the list across the county, with 130 waiting for more than a year.

    The Midlands Foundation Partnership Trust has also raised concerns and has held meetings with Shropshire's Clinical Commissioning Groups to find ways of dealing with the backlog.

    A man has been charged after two men were attacked in Crewe at the weekend.

    A 44-year-old man was attacked in Maplins Moss Place on Saturday night, and a 41-year-old assaulted on nearby Broughton Road.

    Both were taken to hospital with facial injuries.

    A 30-year-old man from Wilmslow has been charged with grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm.

    He's set to appear at Chester Crown Court in August.

    Drugs were found at a house in Thornley Road, Stanfields in Stoke-on-Trent on Monday afternoon, police have said.

    A man is being questioned on suspicion of possessing drugs following a police raid.

    A second man arrested has been released under investigation.

  10. Unemployment down slightly in West Midlandspublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    Unemployment across the UK was 3.8% between March and May 2019. The rate is at its lowest since late 1974.

    In the West Midlands figures fell slightly to 4.8%, according to the Office for National Statistics. Unemployment is highest in the North East at 5.6%.

    Figures also showed wage growth in the UK was 3.6% in the year to May 2019, the highest growth rate since 2008.

    Five people have been arrested after three people were stabbed in "appalling" scenes of violence across a town centre.

    Fights broke out in Queens Road, Mount Street, Coton Road and Pool Bank recreation ground in Nuneaton during Monday evening.

    A 16-year-old boy from Nottingham , a 17-year-old boy from Nuneaton and a 19-year-old from Nuneaton were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder before being taken to hospital to be treated for stab wounds. The 19-year-old has been released from hospital and is currently in police custody.

    A 15-year-old boy from Cannock and 16-year-old boy from Nuneaton were also arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and are currently in police custody.

    It's thought those involved were known to each other and wider members of the public were not targeted, said Warwickshire Police.

  12. Second stage of new high speed rail line approvedpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    MPs have approved the second stage of the multi-billion pound high speed rail project which will see the route extended from Birmingham to Crewe.

    The government says HS2 is vital to the economy - but critics say the cost to the public purse and the environment could be too high.

    HS2 is due to arrive in Crewe by 2027 and the station will become a hub when the line later extends to Manchester.

    Cheshire East Council has said Crewe station needs a new main entrance, a new road bridge and extra parking to accommodate thousands of extra HS2 passengers.

    A man was attacked by a group of men armed with a machete.

    A group of about five men attacked the 34-year-old off Palmer Lane close to the KFC shop on Cross Cheaping in Coventry on Monday afternoon, leaving him with cuts to his arms and chest.

    He remains in hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

    A woman he was with also suffered minor injuries.

    Police believe it was a targeted attack.

    Worcester's former mayor is calling for a cull on seagulls in the city - describing the birds as an "epidemic".

    Alan Amos says what he calls "vicious flying rats" had been waking people up in the early hours, "bombarding" cars with droppings, attacking pets, and forcing people to keep their windows closed.

    Worcester City Council last year doubled the amount it spends on gull control to £30,000, and has agreed to spend up to £144,000 on new gull-proof bins for the city centre.

    Last year, eggs were taken from nests and replaced by fake ones in a bid to control the gull population.

    A petition with more than 2,000 signatures asking authorities in Walsall not to scrap the arboretum's dedicated manager and events coordinator was handed in on Monday.

    Walsall Council is promising to closely monitor how the town’s arboretum is run when cuts to staffing take place next month.

    The council's green spaces team is being reorganised to save £4,000.

    Council leader Mike Bird said there will initially be monthly reports on how staff cuts are affecting the park.

    Warwickshire head into the final day of their County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford needing to bat all day for a draw - or even score what appears an unlikely victory.

    They were left a target of 401 to win when Essex declared yesterday afternoon, and played patiently to reach 67 for one at the close.

    Although Warwickshire have become only the second side to take a game into the final day at Chelmsford this season, they are up against the spinning skills of the County Championship's top wicket taker.

    They lost only Will Rhodes last night, but earlier the opening batsman had bolstered the Bears' bowling attack by taking four wickets in the second innings - finishing with nine in the match.

    Jaguar Land Rover has secured a £500m loan guarantee from the UK government to encourage the carmaker to build electric cars in the country.

    The deal was been signed off by Prime minister Theresa May, in one of her last big interventions before leaving Downing Street.

    The deal will provide a big boost to the UK car industry, which has seen heavy job losses over the past year.

    The move comes just over a week after the company announced a new range of electric cars will be made at it's Castle Bromwich plant.

  18. Road reopens after petrol station shop firepublished at 08:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    Barnes Hill in Bartley Green has fully reopened after an overnight fire at a petrol station supermarket.

    Crews remain at the scene after fire broke out in a storeroom, said the fire service.

    Investigations into the cause are still ongoing.

  19. Council chief to step down by 'mutual agreement'published at 08:38 British Summer Time 16 July 2019

    The managing director of Telford and Wrekin Council is leaving the post, the council has announced.

    Richard Partington was appointed in 2011 replacing the council's chief executive.

    The departure was a "mutually agreed decision", said the council.

    The process to advertise for and appoint a new chief officer role is expected to be completed in the autumn, it added.

    In a statement, council leader Sean Davies wished Mr Partington well for the future.
