The home made security system is made by using a fly zapper which is isolated to the door handle, meaning the rest of the van isn't live.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said it was "possible that a criminal offence could be committed by the installation and use of such a device" but that any complaint would be dealt with "on a case by case basis".

The force, which says it "doesn't endorse the use of electric shocks", also addeed that such devices may also affect motor insurance policies and that those using them also risked a civil claim.
