  11. Kittens found after fire crew's hi-tech huntpublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 30 August 2019

Firefighters on a hi-tech hunt for a litter of kittens have found the feline quintet whose outdoors welfare had been a cause of public concern.

Initially, thermal imaging cameras were used by the Oldbury crew to try to find the cats who had been reported to be living on waste ground in Bearwood.

The cameras didn't pick up the kittens, but working with charity Cats Protection, firefighters eventually found them in a nearby shed; coaxing them out so they could be checked over.

They were answering a social media call to help rescue the litter.

After being looked over by a vet, the five - Steele, Elvis, Boyce, Sam and Penny - are in the care of a charity volunteer, and will eventually be available for adoption.

The charity said volunteers were working on bringing in the stray mother cat, who would be neutered before being found a safe place to live.

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

Meat from animals killed and stripped of their meat in fields is potentially being sold illegally to restaurants and shops, a union has warned.

In Warwickshire, 113 sheep have been reported as butchered in fields this year, with a further 74 reported stolen from farms.

The NFU's James Peck said the crimes were unprecedented and were being carried out by a gang of organised criminals "who appear to have an operation with an outlet" to sell the meat.

He added there was a "real risk to human health" from eating meat from carcasses that had not been processed in a licensed abattoir.

"We'd ask people to avoid it like the plague," he said.
