    A man arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of another man was found in Birmingham has been released on bail, police say.

    The 50-year-old victim was found with head injuries and pronounced dead at the scene on Kingsbury Road, Erdington on Tuesday.

    It is unclear how the victim had come to be injured and his death is being treated as "unexplained", police say.

    Here are some photos from last night's memorial for 28 people who died when their ferry capsized on the River Severn 220 years ago.

    The victims of the Coalport Ferry Disaster on 23 October 1799 were china factory workers crossing the river in the dark.

    Each victim was be remembered as 28 fire cans were lit across Coalport and Jackfield.

    It is hoped a permanent memorial will be created following the ceremony.

  5. 'Suspicious device' treated as a hoaxpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 24 October 2019

    An incident that led to the evacuation of homes in Wolverhampton is being treated as a hoax, police say.

    Bomb disposal experts searched a property in Wheatsheaf Road, Pendeford after a council worker found a suspicious device.

    Residents who had been temporarily relocated to a housing office were allowed back to their homes just after midnight.

    The device was not viable, and did not contain any explosives, West Midlands Police said.

    The property remains sealed off this morning as investigations continue.

    An overturned car is blocking the A38 Sutton bypass southbound in Wishaw, Warwickshire.

    The road is closed from Ox Leys Road Bridge to A4097 Kingsbury Road.

    Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

    Four patients are currently being assessed at the scene, said the ambulance service.

    A woman has died after being hit by a lorry in Birmingham on Wednesday.

    The elderly lady was struck on Pershore Road in Cotteridge at 18:50, the ambulance service said.

    She was taken to hospital but confirmed dead a short time later.

    The road was closed after the crash and yesterday police said the driver was helping them with their inquiries.

  9. 'Dangerous' lorry stopped on M6 compared to mobile bonfirepublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 24 October 2019

    Police stopped this lorry on the M6 in Staffordshire this week and described the load of pallets, external as "dangerously insecure and unbalanced".

    Officers also found it had an MOT that expired back in June, defective lights and indicators and defective brakes.

    The vehicle has now been taken off the road.

    Dozens of people responded on Twitter, external, with some comparing it to Steptoe and Son, while others speculated tongue-in-cheek that it was a mobile bonfire ready for 5 November.

  11. Hospital to get £4m to prepare for winterpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 24 October 2019

    The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford will get an extra £4m to help it prepare for winter, the health secretary has announced.

    Matt Hancock was responding in Parliament to a question from Telford MP Lucy Allan, who invited him to visit the town again and hear concerns about plans to move specialist women and children's services to Shrewsbury.

    The money was described as "winter capital funding", but the Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard tweeted , externalafterwards "£4M extra funding for a 'new' midwife-led maternity unit alongside the main women and children’s wards at the PRH in Telford."

    The hospital has not yet confirmed how it will be spending the £4m.

    What's thought to be one of the oldest donkeys in the world has been celebrating her 60th birthday today.

    Despite her old age, Bubbles continues to entertain children at Hatton Adventure World in Warwickshire.

    Manager Alice Latham said she'd come to the farm about 30 years ago with partner Squeak, who later died.

    "She's smaller than the majority of our donkeys," she said, "so maybe that's her secret."

    "From what we can see, she may be the oldest donkey in the world," she added.

    "She'll get a brush and a groom today and plenty of treats, I think she deserves to be spoilt"

    Police are continuing to question a lorry driver over 39 people found dead in a refrigerated trailer in Essex.

    The vehicle came into the UK from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, according to police.

    Before this tragedy, five people had been found dead in or on lorries or containers in the UK, since figures started being collected, in 2014.

    In 2015 two migrants were found dead in a wooden crate in a warehouse in Branston, Staffordshire. The crate had been sent from Italy in a container.

    The Slovakians have been allowed to invite thousands of children to watch for free, despite a ban on them selling tickets.

    Uefa ruled in August that Slovan must play two European games in an empty stadium as a consequence of racist chanting and banners during a Europa League play-off against PAOK.

    "As we understand it, there are going to be kids groups from all over Slovakia and even some from the Czech Republic," said Wolves fan Peter Abbott, who estimates he has only missed two Wolves games in 44 years.

    "It will be an interesting experience. I really don't know what to expect."

    Keeley Bunker, 20, was found near to the Roman Way area of Tamworth, Staffordshire, in September.

    Wesley Steete, 19, of Tamworth has been charged with her murder and is due to stand trial early next year.

    A bid to ban environmental protesters from Worcester city centre roads has been rejected by the council.

    Conservative councillor Alan Amos said the Extinction Rebellion protest last month “deliberately and completely unnecessarily” brought traffic to a standstill and he added the authority should urgently be meeting with police to stop it from happening again.

    During the motion discussed at a full meeting of Worcester City Council, the Green group argued there was a long history of non-violent direct action leading to positive change in society and democracies should not be blocking the right to protest.

    And Labour councillor Jabba Riaz asked why nobody had suggested banning the English Defence League, which protested in the city twice last year.
