    Billionaire, philanthropist and Phones 4u founder John Caudwell went head-to-head with Labour's shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, after the politician extended an invitation for tea.

    The Birmingham-born billionaire, who now lives in Stoke-on-Trent, said nearly every wealthy person he knew, including him, was thinking of leaving the UK if Labour won the election.

    Mr McDonnell had previously stated "nobody needs or deserves" to be a billionaire.

  2. Yellow weather warnings for Shropshire and Staffordshirepublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind in Staffordshire and parts of Shropshire.

    It said very strong winds were expected which may cause some disruption across the region, particularly with public transport. There is also a risk of short-term power outages, it added.

    Winds are expected to reach up to 50mph in some areas.

  3. Wolverhampton theatre marks 125 yearspublished at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre is marking 125 years today.

    The Victorian building was designed by architect Charles Phipps and cost £10,000 to build in 1894.

    It welcomed about 2,000 people on its opening night to watch an opera. Tonight, the audience will be gathering to watch pantomime Dick Whittington.

    "I often think, when I'm sitting in this auditorium on my own, you can hear the sounds of the past," the theatre's artistic director Adrian Jackson said.

    "I think, gosh, Charlie Chaplin walked on that stage, Winston Churchill... it's a theatre that has a great heart and it always will have."

    Security and barriers have been put up to protect a Banksy mural that appeared in Birmingham on Monday.

    The mural, which features in a film on Instagram showing a man named Ryan on a bench being "pulled" by two reindeer, was vandalised shortly after it was revealed on Vyse Street in the Jewellery Quarter.

    "People want to engage with it and it's public art, we don't want to restrict that, but at the same time we don't want it ruined," Luke Crane, from the Jewellery Quarter BID, said.

    "We want to protect it so that many people can go on to enjoy the artwork."

  5. Virgin Trains replacement offers three passenger classespublished at 09:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    Avanti West Coast, which has recently taken over from Virgin Trains as the operator of the West Coast Main Line, has said it will offer three classes of travel for rail passengers.

    This is the first time there will have been three classes on trains in the UK for 60 years.

    As well as standard and first class seats,Avanti will also offer "premium economy"- however, the fares for this middle-tier option have not yet been revealed.

    Matthew Gregory, chief executive of FirstGroup, which owns the franchise with Italian firm Trenitalia, said the change in policy was "about seeing if we can offer a more flexible offering that suits more price points".

    A woman wrongly evicted from her flat in Rugeley has said she felt "violated" and "like a criminal".

    Three people were given suspended jail sentences at Cannock Magistrates Court after Kara Cox was intimidated after being late with her rent last October.

    It was a campaign of intimidation: A window was nailed open, the door to her bedroom was removed and the heating and electricity was switched off.

    "I was in a very dark place," Ms Cox said. She has now found new accommodation.

    University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust made just under £5.9m through hospital parking charges last year, research reveals.

    Only Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust took more revenue from parking.

    The Press Association study found one in three hospitals in England put up the price of parking last year and charges are at a record high.

    Surveyed patients said the fees were "a rip-off" and "too expensive".

    Deputy chief executive of NHS Providers Saffron Cordery said the charges were "frustrating" but car parks are "expensive to run".

    A number of paving slabs at a Staffordshire church have disappeared.

    They were taken from St Lawrence's Church in Rushton Spencer on Monday.

    Tonnes of rubbish has been illegally dumped at a historic property in Great Barr.

    The fly-tipped waste was abandoned at Great Barr Hall, a derelict Grade II-listed estate built in the 18th Century.

    Residents have said the rubbish is causing a strong smell in the area as they called for urgent action from the authorities.

    Walsall Council said it was waiting to hear from the landowner to discuss safely removing the rubbish.

    Road closures around Hopwood Park Services on the M42 in Alvechurch have now been removed.

    Junction 2 was closed this morning after a delay caused by overrun roadworks, however all lanes are now open, Highways England said.

    A points failure at Crewe is causing disruption, the National Rail website reports, external. Trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes and disruption is expected until 09:00.

    Also, a broken rail near Droitwich Spa means trains are unable to run from Worcester Shrub Hill towards Birmingham Snow Hill. Services will be diverted to Birmingham New Street.

    Overnight roadworks at Hopwood Park Services in Alvechurch have overrun meaning the road is still closed this morning.

    Junction 2 on the M42 was planned to reopen at 03:00 GMT. Highways England advised travellers to plan alternative routes.
