    A Kidderminster man has been sentence to life in prison for killing a man in the town in May.

    Nathan Calder, who is 28 and from Eddy Road in the town was told he will serve at least 17 years behind bars.

    A jury at Worcester Crown Court unanimously found Calder guilty of murdering 44-year old Paul Lundy, who was found at his home the next evening by his housemate.

    Detective Ch Insp Carl Moore, said: "Nathan Calder committed this horrific attack on Paul Lundy, in his own home, leaving him there to be discovered the following evening."

    Mr Lundy's family said they would "miss him every single day" and that their lives "will never be the same again".

    Almost £7m could be spent in Shropshire to convert 16,523 streetlights to LEDs.

    Shropshire Council has already converted 3,000 lights and said the move would save it £506,533 a year in energy costs.

    The council spends about £1m each year on energy for street lighting and believes that could rise to £3.7m in the next 10 years, if nothing is done.

    The council is also under pressure to cut £14m from its budget, because of rising social care costs and it looking to make savings across the board.

    An 87-year-old woman has suffered a broken arm after being robbed in Telford yesterday afternoon.

    The thief grabbed the handbag off her shoulder as she was walking at the junction of Park Avenue and Church Street in Madeley, causing her to fall over and also bang her head.

    A seriously ill cat called Maximus, who attracted donations from all over the world after spending a decade on the streets around the West Midlands is now off to a specialist unit in Bristol.

    Stray Cat Rescue Team West Midlands wrote on its Facebook page: "Max really isn't well, it's been decided to rush him down to a specialist cardiology centre."

    It asked his supporters to "please pray for him. He needs it right now".

    The group is also looking for another £5,000 to help fund this treatment.

    Maximus, who is about 12, was picked up in Great Barr, Sandwell, last week with FIV - an immunodeficiency virus similar to HIV - and claws so long he could not walk.

    Stu Deeley, the head chef at the Wilderness in the Jewellery Quarter said he struggled under the pressure in the early rounds, but "afterwards I'd forgotten about the cameras and just started cooking and started being more of myself".

    Three-time vote counter Ella Rees said a buzz of excitement united tables of strangers and powered them through the night as papers piled up and anxious candidates paced the room.

    The 21-year-old law student will be counting again this time, in her home constituency of Shrewsbury and Atcham. She counted votes in the 2017 local and general elections and the Brexit referendum in 2016.

    "It's exciting because it's something out of the ordinary for everyone, you're up all night concentrating, the press are outside and the national picture is emerging on TV," she said.

    A man is on his way to pick up his falcon after it escaped from his Stoke-on-Trent garden and ended up being rescued by firefighters in Market Harborough.

    Freddie made his escape from the city on Saturday morning but was discovered tangled in a TV aerial more than 70 miles away yesterday.

    His surprised but relieved owner Josh Bailey said he was rescued by the fire service just before a murder of crows attacked him while he was stuck.

    The 24-year-old, who found out where Freddie was after Market Harborough FM reported the rescue, said: "I didn't think he'd get this far, we were looking in local parks. It's been a stressful few days but I'm over the moon now."

    Freddie suffered minor bruising during his ordeal.

    They were taken to hospital, although their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, police said.

    A man has been arrested over the theft of paving slabs from a rural church in Staffordshire on Monday.

    About 60 of the York stone paving slabs had been taken from outside St Lawrence’s Church at Rushton Spencer. Staffordshire Police said a 46-year-old from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of theft after officers stopped a van in Cheshire.
