  2. Hospitals A&Es among worst in Englandpublished at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2020

    New figures, external show Shropshire's Accident and Emergency units remain among the worst performing in England and its worst figures for the year, by some margin.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust was put in special measures in November 2018, in part due to its A&Es.

    By the government's favoured four-hour benchmark, just 60.5% of patients who attended A&Es in Shrewsbury or Telford were seen inside that window - the target is 95%.

    Last month 348 people had to wait more than 12 hours in the A&Es for a bed, up from 61 in November and 44 in October.

    By that measure the trust stands out very prominently as the worst performing in England.

    The number of admissions last month rose by 959 compared with December 2018, but were broadly in line with most of 2019.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust has consistently been towards the bottom of NHS England's A&E league table and has been struggling with a shortage of staff in the department.

    It is planning to reorganise its services to make Shrewsbury the main centre for emergency medicine in the future.

    A Shakespeare-themed exhibition - inside a refurbished phone box - is to be unveiled to the public on Friday.

    The moving sculpture outside the Mechanical Art and Design (MAD) Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon has been created by Swiss kinetic artist Pascal Bettex.

    The MAD Museum is the only permanent museum of its kind in the UK which showcases over 90 pieces of kinetic art and automata.

    Although the Museum own the phone box after it was decommissioned by BT, it must remain in place in Henley Street, it said.

  4. Authorities 'no longer interested' in green belt landpublished at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2020

    A group of Black Country authorities are no longer interested in building homes on green belt land near the M54, the leader of Shropshire Council has said.

    Bradford Estates had been offering land near Tong, to help meet their need for more housing, but Peter Nutting said he met the West Midlands Mayor Andy Street yesterday and was told there was no longer support for the scheme.

    The plan for up to 3,000 homes will go before Shropshire Council's cabinet next week, but Mr Nutting said it was clear his administration would not support it.

    The Hereford Times newspaper will be putting thousands of old papers and photographs into storage, as it moves to new, smaller, offices.

    It will also planning to start digitising its archives in the next couple of years.

    The newspaper has been based at offices near the racecourse on Holmer Road for three decades and is moving to more modern buildings at the Rotherwas enterprise since in the spring.

  7. Alton Towers designs Gangsta Granny ridepublished at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2020

    Alton Towers is working with David Walliams on a new Gangsta Granny ride, external and will be transforming part of the theme park into "The World of David Walliams".

    The author and comedian said he was "overwhelmed to be asked" and Alton Towers said the ride would simulate a ride through sewers into a vault containing the Crown Jewels and then an "explosive escape", pursued by the authorities.

    The ride is due to open in the spring and Alton Towers said there would also be David Walliams themed fairground rides, a shop and a David Walliams themed room at its hotel.

    Three lodges could be built near Pontesbury in Shropshire, to provide overnight accommodation to people visiting a fishing lake.

    Gavin Dransfield from Earlsdale Fishery said the earth-covered cabins would "blend into the hillside" and be open all year round, allowing his business to run events for 10-15 people.

    Plans have been submitted and here's an illustration of how they might look.

  9. Five arrested after carjackingpublished at 09:45 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2020

    Five men have been arrested following a carjacking in the Wyken area Coventry on Wednesday.

    The stolen van and another car believed to be connected to the robbery were spotted on the M6, police said, before being stopped in the area of St Chads Road, Bilston.

    The five, aged between 22 and 36, were arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in police custody for questioning.

    Great Britain missed out on the ATP Cup semi-finals after losing to Australia, despite having four match points.

    Dan Evans had earlier kept Britain in the tie with a thrilling three-set win over De Minaur.

    The Birmingham player who upset world number 11 David Goffin to inspire the turnaround against Belgium in the group stage that kept his team in the tournament, once again showed he has the mettle and the shots to beat higher-ranked opponents.

    He sealed a thrilling 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (7-2) win in three hours 24 minutes - the longest match of the tournament.

    The Briton, ranked 24 places below De Minaur at 42nd in the world, put behind him a poor start to break back in the fifth game and took the first set on a tie-break when his opponent netted.

    The government's new Town of the Year competition has - in The Guardian's , externalwords today - "backfired spectacularly" after officials failed to realise that the place chosen for the launch, Wolverhampton, has been a city for almost 20 years.

    Local civic leaders, it says, expressed incredulity when the communities secretary, Robert Jenrick, announced he was kicking off a countrywide tour of towns in their city.

    According to the paper, the gaffe will be particularly embarrassing for Mr Jenrick, who was born and educated in Wolverhampton.

    A group of Muslim charities in Birmingham has opened a night shelter to offer beds to the city's homeless people during the winter months.

    The site near Snow Hill station, run by the As-Suffa organisation, also provides food to those sleeping rough.

    It will stay open until it gets warmer in the spring.

  15. Scrap metal fire produces 'toxic smoke'published at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2020

    An overnight fire at a scrap yard in the Batchley area of Redditch produced toxic smoke.

    The blaze at Simms Metal Management on the Enfield Industrial Estate involved quantities of metal and plastics.

    Crews were called at 22:30 last night and had dealt with the blaze by 03:30.

    Residents were told to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

    Staff from Simms helped to get the fire under control using one of their site vehicles.

    The fire service said a team would be inspecting the site this morning.
