NHS supplies of face masks could be put at risk if the government starts advising the public to wear them, hospital bosses have warned.
The government's scientific advisers are to meet later to discuss whether the public should be urged to wear masks in a bid to combat coronavirus.
But Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, warned there should be "clear evidence" to justify their use.
He said securing supplies for NHS staff amid huge global demand was "crucial".

A Coventry woman has paid her own tribute to the war veteran who raised millions for the NHS.
Captain Tom Moore, 99, amassed donations of more than £27m by completing 100 sponsored laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.
Mary Hart, from the Stoke area of Coventry, said she'd knitted the woolly likeness "for fun", and shared the picture with her daughter and granddaughter, but it had "just gone mad on Facebook".
She said: "People have been in touch and said that he would love it. I think they've been in touch with him - I'm not sure who - I think it's a neighbour."

Some airports are "at risk" of closure because of the loss of business during the coronavirus pandemic, experts have warned.
Nine out of 10 flights have been grounded since the UK went into lockdown.
Airports said cargo flights were running and shareholders were being supportive as they worked to cut costs.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24, external recorded just 711 departures from the UK's 10 biggest airports last week.
This compares with 7,865 in the week up to the UK's lockdown.

A food aid programme in North Staffordshire run by construction machinery firm JCB is to be expanded, the company has said.
JCB has been providing thousands of meals for disadvantaged people across the area.
Now it is to make and help distribute sandwiches for homeless people in Stoke-on-Trent.

West Bromwich Albion has provided rooms at its ground for maternity patients during the coronavirus pandemic, health officials have said.
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust said it wanted to set up an "alternative space" for antenatal and postnatal appointments.
Helen Hurst, director of midwifery, said: "Women are slightly anxious about coming to hospital in the current climate so we wanted to find a safe space away from the hospital.
"We are really grateful to the Baggies for providing this space for women during this worrying time.”
The club said it was "more than happy" to open its doors, and club chief executive Mark Jenkins added "we like to think you are never too young to join the Albion family.”
A driver has been caught doing 108mph on the M56 near Manchester.
The incident comes days after GMP Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said some motorists were using the quieter roads as race tracks.
