    Staffordshire Police officers have been told to be on the lookout for people using the coronavirus outbreak as an opportunity to carry out crimes.

    In a message to his team, Ch Con Gareth Morgan said scams exploiting the crisis had increased and "we need to be relentless in pursuing those who would use this crisis for their own gain".

    He added there were also concerns about the impact on the isolated and vulnerable - particularly in domestic abuse and child exploitation.

    A barbers, mobile phone shop and a vaping shop have all been closed down by Stoke-on-Trent's trading standards after they were found to be still trading.

    The government wants only stores selling essential goods to remain open during the coronavirus lockdown and the city council said it has staff out enforcing the rule.

    Hospital staff will get free buses between the Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals.

    Shropshire Council is making its fleet of park and ride buses and drivers available after deciding to suspend the regular service from tomorrow.

    The council said it is also working to find ways to make its buses useful to other essential workers and vulnerable groups.

    People camped in ancient woodland have been evicted after a long-running dispute with high-speed rail project, HS2.

    The protesters, who fear the scheme will have a catastrophic effect on the environment, filmed the moment bailiffs arrived at the Warwickshire site, where they've been camped for almost six months.

    Workers wore masks during the process, with HS2 saying protesters had put them at risk.

    It was granted a court order to remove campaigners.

    NHS workers in Warwickshire are getting a sweet treat, thanks to a woman from Leamington Spa.

    Jess Mooney, who runs Bread of Life, is baking for the staff at Warwick Hospital.

    She's getting them picked up and then they're being shared around doctors and nurses.

    Birmingham Airport could serve as a mortuary during the coronavirus crisis.

    The site said it was co-operating with authorities to find a "suitable location" if the need for the facility arose.

    It emerged earlier this week that nearby leisure site the NEC could double as a field hospital, along with London's ExCeL Centre.

  14. Coronavirus won't hold up relief roadpublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2020

    Shrewsbury's north west relief road will not be seriously delayed by the coronavirus outbreak, the leader of Shropshire Council has said.

    A planning application for the road was due in May and it might have to wait to go before a planning committee if rules on gatherings are still in place then, but councillor Peter Nutting is confident all the necessary consultation can go ahead.

    Mr Nutting also said there will likely be a planning inquiry and time has been allowed for that, but added: "We don’t see any need for a major delay."

    The road will connect the A5 at Welshpool Road roundabout in the west to the Ellesmere Road roundabout in the north, with new bridges over the River Severn and the Shrewsbury to Chester railway line.
