  1. Teachers make 2,000 face shields for NHS staffpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 7 April 2020

    Teachers making face shields to help protect NHS workers from coronavius have sent out more than 2,200.

    Stuart Sweetman and two other design and technology staff are making the masks at King Henry VIII school in Coventry.

    The school said it had had been "overwhelmed" by support, and a crowdfunding page set up to raise funds for materials has so far raised more than £2,000.

    Tributes have been paid to Sandwell’s longest-serving councillor, described as an "inspiration", who died over the weekend.

    Councillor Geoff Lewis, chair of the ethical standards and member development committee, had been ill since December last year.

    A member of Sandwell Council for 29 years, he represented the Friar Park ward in Wednesbury since 1991 and also served as Mayor in 2009/2010.

    Fellow ward councillor Simon Hackett said despite his illness (which is not thought to be related to coronavirus) Mr Lewis was still working only a few weeks ago and spoke of his dedication to his home town describing him as a "Wednesbury person through and through."

    A virtual football match between Aston Villa and Wolves raised more than £4,000 for Acorn's Children's Hospice, external.

    Villa defender Ezri Konsa lost 5-3 to Wolves’ forward Diogo Jota in a live-streamed derby, played on FIFA, on Saturday.

    Acorns was due to benefit from a bucket collection at Villa’s home game against Wolves - but the match was one of those affected by the suspension of the Premier League.

    The children's intensive care unit at the Royal Stoke Hospital has closed, allowing the beds to be used to treat people with coronavirus.

    Critically-ill patients have been moved to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    Eight beds have been freed up and will be used for adult patients who need a ventilator.

    The Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, is among those wishing the prime minister a speedy recovery from coronavirus after it was announced he was moved to intensive care.

    Mr Street also thanked NHS workers for their "devotion, care and professionalism".

    A group of singers in Wolverhampton have recorded a song which has raised thousands of pounds for NHS staff.

    Voices For New Cross was created by Kelly Ward and Ash Wilde to help raise money for medical staff battling rising numbers of coronavirus cases across the city.

    The cover of Cyndi Lauper's 1986 single True Colors was recorded by Kelly, Ryan Evans, Jade Alexandra, Lenny Francesca and rapper Alex-Is.
