Talks are "ongoing" with the government about the future of the temporary mortuary that is currently operating at Birmingham Airport, a regional meeting has heard.
The facility, able to store at least 1,500 bodies, started being used at the beginning of April.
Deborah Cadman, chief executive of the West Midlands Combined Authority and part of the region's strategic coordination group, said there was a 12-month lease agreement in place with the airport and it had been funded for a total of 20 weeks.
"Any decision about the future of the facility will be taken in the context of the national provision," she said.
