    Talks are "ongoing" with the government about the future of the temporary mortuary that is currently operating at Birmingham Airport, a regional meeting has heard.

    The facility, able to store at least 1,500 bodies, started being used at the beginning of April.

    Deborah Cadman, chief executive of the West Midlands Combined Authority and part of the region's strategic coordination group, said there was a 12-month lease agreement in place with the airport and it had been funded for a total of 20 weeks.

    "Any decision about the future of the facility will be taken in the context of the national provision," she said.

    • A recovery plan is being drawn up to get Newcastle-under-Lyme's economy back on track as the lockdown starts to ease. The borough council's working with the local Business Improvement District to allow more shops to reopen safely as well as looking at how to reopen the town's leisure centre and museum.

    • Taxi drivers in Burton-upon-Trent who need to replace their ageing vehicles have been given an extension to their licence if it's due to expire during lockdown. East Staffordshire Borough Council agreed to the move with drivers seeing their finances drop due to the pandemic reducing the number of taxi journeys.

    • A school catering to children from nursery age to sixth form could be built in place of a former power station. Revised plans have been submitted to local councils by the owner of the Rugeley Power Station site to include an all-through school as well as the 2,300 homes already agreed.

    Volunteers are being recruited for the next two phases of trials to help develop a coronavirus vaccine.

    The trial is being conducted across the country, with sites in Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield and London. Vaccinations set to take place in May and June this year.

    The trial will analyse whether healthy people can be protected from Covid-19 with the vaccine created by the Oxford Vaccine Group.

    Volunteers aged 56 and over, as well as children aged five to 12, are being sought for phase two, and people aged 18 and over for phase three.

    New facilities at Wolverhampton railway station will open to the public on Monday.

    The first phase of the £150m interchange has been completed including updated signage new vending machines, toilet facilities and retail units - ready to be kitted out.

    Due to coronavirus social distancing measures, a one-way system has been marked out at the station for people to follow and customers are being encouraged to buy their tickets online in advance if possible.

    Phase two of the project will see the demolition of the remainder of the current station building and completion of the new build to house three more retail units, as well as a customer waiting room and help point.

    These are some of the stories being covered in Herefordshire by the Local Democracy Reporting Service this week:

    • Schools in Herefordshire will make the final decision on whether to reopen in 1 June, the county council has said. The local authority said some schools might feel it was too early to have pupils back at that stage and it would work with them on a case-by-case basis.

    • Hereford Sixth Form College is getting ready to reopen next month with new measures to deal with the pandemic and social distancing guidelines. Students have been told by the principal it intends to return to "face to face" lessons on 1 June with a trial period to explore new ways of working.

    • Residents in Ross-on-Wye will be able to quiz their mayor via video link from next week. Councillor Daniel Lister will host a Zoom meeting on 27 May and the council said people can book a 10-minute slot.

    Special constables working in the West Midlands are to be given a one-off payment as thanks for their "exceptional" contribution to the policing effort, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has said.

    Specials, who are unpaid volunteers, have contributed more than 2,000 hours of front-line policing across the region during the coronavirus lockdown.

    After volunteering for 16 hours, they will now receive a payment of £150, said PCC David Jamieson at today's regional roundup meeting.

    The Special Constabulary Governance Group (COVID-19) has also agreed to recognise their contribution by awarding a specially commissioned pin badge accompanied by a special letter of thanks the Strategic Policing and Crime Board heard earlier this week. , external

    Coventry's Ikea store is to close permanently, the company has announced.

    The furniture giant Ikea will open 19 of its stores across England and Northern Ireland on 1 June, including Wednesbury, it said.

    Only one adult and one child from a household will be allowed in store at any one time and one-way systems will be put in place.

    The company announced that it will shut down its Coventry city centre store this summer, in its first big closure of a UK outlet, and confirmed today it would not reopen.

    The force said the 44-year-old was injured on Uxbridge Street when fighting inside a house spilled on to the road.

    His widow Madalina said his death had "left a huge void in my heart that nothing and no one will ever be able to fill".

    Two 22-year-old men, both from the town, had previously been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and released under investigation, officers said.
