A parrot has been reunited with its owners after flying into a tree at the fire station in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Charlie was coaxed down with a banana before being returned home by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service crews.

Plans to build up to 1,000 homes at the former Ironbridge Power Station site are to go before Shropshire Council's southern planning committee today.

The proposals include a retirement village, business-space, a primary school, sports pitches and a rail link.

Council officers are recommending approval, but parish councils around the 340-acre site have concerns about the development.

Simon Heath, from Buildwas Parish Council, says it is worried there will be more accidents at the bottom of Buildwas Bank if the plans are given the go-ahead.

"We are very concerned about the heavy traffic coming down from the Telford direction that aren't able to stop; already we have many lorries unable to make the turn at the bottom.

"With so many accidents over the years we are very concerned about what's going to happen at that junction," he said.

The Conservative West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says he agrees with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to extend Covid-19 restrictions until July.

He admitted the delay was going to come "at a cost" to other industries such as hospitality but said without acting, there was the potential the country could go back to stronger restrictions.

“If you have two jabs you are pretty safe from this variant, if you either have one jab or no jabs you are at risk of contracting Covid seriously," he said.

"There are still millions of people over 50 who have not had their two jabs and obviously we haven’t even offered the jab to people under 25.

“The point is going to come where we have to say we are going to have to live with this disease, that is absolutely right, but the point that I am making….is you have to get to a best proportion of the vulnerable population vaccinated before we make that change in strategy.”

A 17-year-old boy is in a critical condition after a collision, West Mercia Police said.

At about 17:30 BST, a motorbike being ridden by the teenager was involved with a collision with a Vauxhall Vivaro van on Twitchen Road in Clunbury, Shropshire.

The boy was seriously injured and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by air ambulance where he remains.

West Mercia Police has appealed for anyone with information about the collision to come forward.

Dr Justin Varney, medical director for Birmingham City Council, said it had approached government to be a pilot site for vaccinating older children.

Dr Varney said it was looking at more "innovative" ways to prevent the spread of the Delta variant.

He said it had approached government to try to accelerate the vaccination of university students before they go home at the end of the term, as well as offering to be a pilot site for vaccinating schoolchildren.

He said the need to vaccinate children is already in the public domain, with a plan coming in autumn.

"We have said to government, the size of Birmingham, we have hundreds of thousands of children who will be eligible for the vaccine, we really want to be the pilot site, we want to be the area that government works with to develop how to do it at the scale of Birmingham," he said.

"If we can work out how to vaccinate safely the hundreds of thousands of children that we have in Birmingham then frankly the rest of the country is going to be a doddle.

"So the proposal we have put to government is 'we would like to be your pilot site' and that is partly about giving our children the first chance to be protected, because that is where we are seeing some of the highest case rates, but it is also because for us this is a much bigger challenge than it is in smaller areas."

Wolverhampton Speedway has made the decision to cancel an upcoming match after the news the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in England has been pushed back to at least 19 July.

Chris Van Straaten said the next scheduled event had been due on 21 June and he had suffered losses during the past three events due to limitations because of restrictions.

He said going ahead with the event would have hit them too hard.

“We were clutching at this dream that next Monday all restrictions, particularly the social distancing which is the greatest handicap to us, would have gone," he said.

"I can understand the decision but it is still very difficult to accept.

“We are having to take steps which are inconvenient to some people, cancelling the match at relatively short notice. But if it saves the club in the long term, then we will look back and think it was the right thing to do."

He said they now hoped to speak to City of Wolverhampton Council to see what more could be done for the club while restrictions remain in place.

A lorry is trapped under a bridge in Worcestershire.

The vehicle is stuck under a rail bridge in Bromsgrove.

Birmingham New Street station tweeted engineers have assessed it is safe for services to continue using the bridge and will be working to get the HGV free.

Birmingham City Council's medical director has urged people to get their Covid-19 vaccine, amid rising cases in the city.

Birmingham is one of six areas in England where the government has announced extra support to help suppress the spread of the Delta variant.

Additional testing, tracing, isolation support and measures to maximise vaccine uptake will be deployed.

Dr Justin Varney said the city was seeing "quite large increases" in the case rate, up 65% in the past week.

In addition, he said, some 15 to 20 areas in the city were seeing the case rates rise above 100 in 100,000; areas, he said, where vaccine uptake had been lower.

"Birmingham is England's second city and if we go over we will take a large proportion of the country with us because of the way people move to and from the city as part of their daily lives," Dr Varney said.

"If you’re listening today and you’re hearing about the Delta variant, the Delta variant is more infectious and there is some emerging science that it is more dangerous and it is putting a larger proportion of people in hospital, please go and get the jab.

"It is about protecting you and protecting the people you love."

Leek residents aged from 18 to their early 20s are being reminded they have two days left to book their Covid-19 vaccinations.

A pop-up clinic is operating at Leek Moorlands Hospital, in Staffordshire, until tomorrow, Wednesday.

Surge testing has been deployed in the town after more than 60 people tested positive for the Delta variant.

Staffordshire County Council is now urging younger people to take up the offer of a vaccine before the pop-up clinic closes.

Dr Johnny McMahon, council cabinet member for health, said: “We’re seeing a high number of cases amongst the 18-34 age bracket, which is why we’re asking people in this age group to get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible."

The £1.4m scheme in Birmingham comes as fly-tipping soars by a third, council chiefs say.

A group of firefighters came to the rescue of four ducklings which were trapped in a storm drain on Sunday.

Crews from Hereford and Worcester Fire Service helped reunite them with their mother, after freeing them from the drain near Farrier Street in Worcester.

Following a complete stoppage of services due to a fault, some West Midlands tram services are set to resume.

West Midlands Metro, which runs the service between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, removed all its 21 trams on Friday for inspection after cracks were found on one of the fleet.

But, from this morning, services will be back in operation between Wolverhampton and Bull Street in Birmingham.

As an additional precautionary measure, each tram in service will undergo an extra daily inspection.

West Midlands Metro said it would increase capacity and frequency as more trams were confirmed as safe to operate.
