No arrests have been made at this stage and anyone in the area at the time of the stabbings is asked to contact police and share any pictures they may have.

A woman has described how she and a friend helped one of the Birmingham stabbing victims who she said was bleeding heavily.

    Nikita Denton

Nikita Denton, 29, from Edgbaston said she had been celebrating her birthday in Hurst Street when a man shouted someone had been stabbed.

She and her friend ran towards the wounded woman, she said.

"My best friend Jay held her head and talked her through everything the whole time and wouldn't leave her side."

Scenes in the area were "frantic", she said, but she and her friend remained calm throughout.

"When the paramedics arrived they asked us to help," she added.

"I got water and used the torch on my phone to help them see the wounds as they didn't have a torch at that time."

"I'd hate to think if we weren't there that night as she would have been alone."

She also said paramedics taking part in a "safe space" initiative were on hand to help.

  6. Concerns about city centre policing: Labour MPpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 6 September 2020

Birmingham Ladywood MP Shabana Mahmood has said she has had concerns about police resources in the city centre, especially as more businesses opened up after lockdown.

    Shabana Mahmood MP

"I know that the pandemic has increased pressures and we are one of the youngest cities - if not the youngest in city - in Europe and my constituency is home to a very large proportion of young people and many people who want to go out and enjoy themselves come to the city centre so there are challenges," she said.

"The lockdown and pandemic has heightened those challenges," she added, "so there is certainly a conversation to be had with government about the funding that they make available.

"There are those of us - myself included - who are concerned about the overall state of policing and who want to see the police have all the resources they need to keep all of us safe."

The Birmingham Ladywood consituency covers the city centre.

"They got the area closed down very quickly and reassured people very quickly."

"Unfortunately the world in which live at the moment, this could happen at any time and any place in any part of the country," he added.

  11. 'They've got a sense of who they're looking for'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 6 September 2020

It's going to be hard for officers to find a motivation for last night's attacks until the suspect has been arrested, BBC reporter Phil Mackie said.

    Phil Mackie

"This man was walking through the city centre last night, apparently able to carry out a number of stabbings over a period of an hour and a half and still get away from each incident and not be captured by the police," he said.

"This is an active investigation and the key thing at the moment for West Midlands Police is to track that man down.

"They've said they have got a lot of images from last night, a lot of CCTV, and also there is some eyewitness footage as well which they're storing which suggests they've got a sense of who they're looking for - and if they need the help of the public and the media I'm sure they will release a picture.

"But at the moment that's not happened so that would suggest they've got a sense of who they're looking for."
