Malcolm X’s name resonates down the decades – Kanye West, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean and Ice Cube reference him in their music – and many others. Movies have been made about him – lots, big-name stars like Denzel Washington playing the lead. The man who rejected his childhood surname because of its slavery connotations is still one of the biggest names from 60s America - and still divides opinion. So why was this superstar of civil rights in the UK? And why Smethwick – a small industrial town seemingly a million miles away from the segregation and racism of the USA? Increased support for jobs and workers hit by Covid-19 restrictions from the chancellor has been welcomed by a bar owner in Birmingham as "a glimmer of hope".
Rishi Sunak announced big changes to the Job Support Scheme set to replace furlough in November.
Businesses in tier two areas such as Birmingham, particularly in the hospitality sector, had complained that they would be better off if they were under tier three restrictions.
Under the revised scheme, employers will pay less and staff can work fewer hours before they qualify.
Dani Collins runs Velvet on Broad Street and said she had been "absolutely dreading" 1 November when furlough ends.

Warwick District Council leader Andrew Day has now confirmed the vote won't be held in 2021 either.
Instead the council is looking to form a "super district" by merging some services with Stratford-on-Avon District Council.
The two authorities will look at how they can work together to tackle climate change issues.

More positive cases of Covid-19 are expected at a university in Shropshire after they shot up in the past few days, according to its vice-chancellor.

The figures, from the university, , externalshow 19 cases among students the week before and none a fortnight ago.
Vice-chancellor David Llewellyn said cases had been increasing across Telford and Wrekin.

The infection rate for the wider Telford and Wrekin area has increased from 79.0 per 100,000 in the seven days to 10 October to 142.9 a week later.
