    Shropshire Council's headquarters in Shrewsbury is a step closer to demolition, after Historic England decided not to list it.

    The Shirehall building in Shrewsbury is striking but it fails to meet the criteria for protection, the agency, which champion's England's heritage, said.

    Campaigners had claimed it was an important example of post-war architecture which should be kept.

    The authority wants to sell the site for housing and move to smaller premises with a greater use of remote working.

  2. New three-tier system comes into force todaypublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 14 October 2020

    The government's new three-tier system of coronavirus "alert levels" comes into effect today.

    It means different areas of the country will have different restrictions.

    Birmingham, Sandwell, Solihull, Wolverhampton, Walsall and East Cheshire are all in the middle tier.

    They're described as being "high risk" areas.

    You are not allowed to meet people from other households indoors and a maximum of six people can meet outdoors.

    The other parts of the West Midlands are tier one, or "medium risk"

    A coronavirus vaccine is "highley unlikely" to be available before Christmas, Birmingham's director of public health says.

    Dr Justin Varney was speaking at a city council cabinet meeting and said that while planning had begun around a potential future roll-out of a vaccine, next year was more realistic.

    Earlier this month it was reported that doctors in the West Midlands had been told to plan for a mass coronavirus vaccination scheme from as early as November.

    But Dr Varney explained: "It’s a significant challenge to vaccinate the population so what the NHS was asked to do was look at how they would actually deliver a vaccine at scale".

    Extinction Rebellion activists dressed as corpses have staged a protest outside Birmingham City Council offices today.

    They say they're unhappy with council progress towards the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

    About 30 people lay in Victoria Square underneath white sheets.

    A 20-year-old man found with gunshot wounds at Bridges Business Park in Telford just after midday has died of his injuries, police say.

    A murder investigation has been launched.

    The West Mercia force said the area remained cordoned off and it did not believe there was a risk to other people in the area.

    Earlier police reports suggested the victim may have been shot at from a vehicle.

    Archaeologists think they've uncovered the remains of 19th Century pottery kilns at a car park in the Fenton area of Stoke-on-Trent.

    The site is being redeveloped as part of an £18.5m housing investment in the town and 42 apartments are due to be built there.
