John Dutton, a senior lecturer in ecology at the University of Worcester, said he was not surprised they had been spotted in the West Midlands, but there was no cause for concern.

"Wild boar can very easily live within the mosaic we have in England in Wales in terms of hedgerows, ditches, small areas of woodland," he said.

"They’ve obviously expanded since they first re-emerged in 2009 and individuals will expand out and increase their range."

He said people needed to consider adjusting their behaviour if wild boar were nearby, putting dogs on leads and making noise to let the animals know people were around.

"I think it's important to prevent any similar things going forward in the future, not just on this particular plaque but in terms of damage and vandalism around the city," Jon Fraser, from Worcestershire County Council, said.
