    The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have met performers taking part in Coventry City of Culture's signature launch event as part of their visit to the city.

    The royals were taken to the Herbert Art Gallery to meet the artists, who will be taking part in Coventry Moves on 5 June.

    Some of the performers were on scooters and bicycles, prompting Charles to tell them: "Very energetic."

    They were also shown part of the gallery's 2-Tone exhibition, celebrating Coventry's musical heritage.

    Prince Charles, a patron of the British Asian Trust, met supporters of the Oxygen for India appeal during his visit to Coventry, which has so far raised more than £4m towards the effort.

    "I particularly want to show my appreciation, as far as the trust is concerned, which has been able to begin a meaningful emergency appeal and action to ensure that oxygen concentrators have got to India and have been dispatched to rural areas, through partners, to where there is a real need," he said.

    "I cannot thank you enough; for your response, the degree to which you've responded and the amount of money that's been raised and pledged makes such a difference and personally makes me very proud."

    Audiences are being asked to get their Christmas jumpers back on for a pantomime which has been re-scheduled for a May start.

    Sleeping Beauty is being performed at Studley Sports Centre, external in Studley, Warwickshire, between 28 May and 6 June.

    Aunty Jen Productions says the socially-distanced show will still bring "the magic of this classic fairy-tale complete with songs, dances and some hilarious comedy routines".

    The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are in Coventry today to celebrate the launch of its year as the UK's City of Culture 2021.

    The royals began with a visit to Coventry Cathedral at about 11:00 to mark the 59th anniversary of its consecration.

    They were met by the Bishop of Coventry who led them to the ruins where Prince Charles laid a wreath at the Altar of Rubble.

    The couple were then given a tour and attended a short service before their next engagement.

    The planned North West Relief Road around Shrewsbury has been opposed by the town council, external.

    Members voted against the £87m project at a meeting last night, saying they believed it could bring environmental problems, including the loss of trees and fields.

    Council leader, Labour's Alan Moseley, said: "The people of Shrewsbury do not want this relief road. We need to speak out loud on this and ensure we are heard."

    The project has been promised £54m by the government and Shropshire Council's new leader, Lezley Picton, has said she has no plans to abandon the four-mile road scheme, which could open in 2023 and take traffic away from the town centre.

    The town's Conservative MP, Daniel Kawczynski, said: "We need to think like the Victorians did", adding: "Shrewsbury will suffer economically without the construction of this vital artery".

    A policeman who said his "man bun" was a distinctive feature of his life, has had his long locks shaved off, raising more than £8,000 for charity.

    PC Richard Lymer, of Staffordshire Police's road policing unit, was inspired to raise money after seeing friends affected by cancer.

    PC Lymer, who said his hairstyle "gained its own notoriety" when he appeared on TV show CopsUK: Bodycam Squad, had his 22in (55cm) locks shaved off at a community event on Saturday.

    He set up a JustGiving page and the funds will be split between Katharine House Hospice, StrongMen charity - which helps men cope with bereavement - and Mummy’s Star, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during or near pregnancy.

    "Through donations, social media shares or just kindness in attending my event to support me has meant I have achieved this amazing figure," he said.

    Cannabis with a street value of about £300,000 has been seized in four raids in Coventry.

    West Midlands Police said , externalofficers had a tip-off about suspected cannabis factories and searched the buildings on Winchester Street, Hillfields, on Sunday.

    They said the large amount of cannabis they seized was worth "an approximate value of a third of £1m".

    People are being asked not to walk in to Shrewsbury's accident and emergency department today, because of problems with the drains.

    The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital said there was a very strong, unpleasant smell and until the drains were chemically cleaned patients should go to Telford's A&E instead.

    The hospital hasn't said how long it will take to resolve the problem and said the advice remained "until further notice".

    Three activists have climbed on to the roof of a factory in Tamworth.

    Members of campaign group Palestine Action have been occupying the roof of the Israeli-owned Elbit Systems subsidiary Elite KL Ltd since about 05:00, police said.

    Officers are at the scene negotiating with the protesters in an effort to get them down safely, the Staffordshire force said.

    A police officer who lied about the reasons she was off work would have been dismissed had she not already resigned, a misconduct panel found.

    Shara Green, 24, worked as a response officer based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, and was investigated last year by Staffordshire Police.

    Following a misconduct panel hearing, the force concluded that she had breached honesty and integrity, duties and responsibilities and discreditable conduct standards by lying about the reason she was off work.

    "The public expect and deserve to have trust and confidence in their police," Deputy Chief Constable Emma Barnett said.

    "When a police officer is deliberately dishonest it corrodes that trust and is a betrayal of the values for which the police service stands."

    Ms Green has also been banned from working in law enforcement again.
