Read MoreThe restoration of the Birmingham family home of Joseph Chamberlain has been given a financial boost thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Chamberlain Highbury Trust said the mansion and gardens needed "a lot" of refurbishment.
Chamberlain, who was born in 1836, was a Birmingham mayor and MP.
The trust said the latest grant meant it could start planning for a programme of major improvements over the next four years.
The funding, it added, was a two-stage process, with £368,000 coming from the development grant, which is 59% of the £619,000 needed for the development phase. The trust is set to provide the remaining 41%.
A second stage Lottery grant of a more substantial sum would cover the delivery phase.
Chair of the trustees, Les Sparks, said: “We have worked as a trust for six years to get to this very significant position.
"In that time we have demonstrated our ability to manage Highbury and deliver improvements on time and to budget.
"We are all thrilled that the National Lottery Heritage Fund has recognised this and entrusted us with a development grant.”
A Lottery Heritage Fund spokesperson said: “We are delighted to support this project that aims to restore Joseph Chamberlain’s family home of Highbury to its former glory, whilst also adapting it for 21st century use."

Stoke City forward Jacob Brown has been called up to the Scotland squad for the first time for the final World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Denmark.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke said: "Jacob's had a good spell at Stoke and caught my eye.
"He'll bring us something a little bit different and freshen up the striking area."
The inclusion of Brown, 23, will come as a surprise to Scotland fans.
However, the Yorkshireman qualifies through his mother and has impressed at Stoke this season having joined last year from Barnsley, where he came through the academy.
He scored 12 times in 82 appearances for the club, and has four goals and four assists this campaign as Stoke aim to get back to the Premier League under Michael O'Neill.
"He's quick and direct," Clarke added. "He's a hard working striker who puts defenders under pressure. I don't want to put too much pressure on a young man making his way in the game.
"If he continues to progress the way he's progressing, hopefully he can do well for his country."

A photo has been released of a potential witness to a fatal assault in Birmingham city centre.

Delays in accepting ambulance patients at hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford are putting them at "catastrophic risk", West Midlands Ambulance Service has warned.
In September, patients and the ambulance crews with them spent 1,375 hours waiting outside the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. At Telford's Princess Royal Hospital, they waited 768 hours.
Patients are supposed to be handed over within 15 minutes of arriving at A&E.
West Midlands Ambulance Service has been complaining about handover delays at the two hospitals for a number of years.
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust said it's an issue across the UK, but apologised and said action was being taken.
This includes prioritising those in the back of ambulances, looking to provide care at home and in the community, and in the longer-term to create more space and beds to look after people within the hospitals.
