Land near Stafford town centre is set to become the borough council’s biggest nature reserve after community leaders gave plans the green light.
Stafford Borough Council already owns the 42-acre section of floodplain meadow next to Fairway, which is now to be declared a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
Current proposals include planting up to 10,000 trees, restoring native black poplars to the riverside, developing flower meadows and enhancing wetland scrapes.
Council leader Patrick Farrington said: “Everyone is supportive of the proposals as we know we want to make our borough a place where people want to come and live, work and stay.”

Second-hand car sales in the UK have more than doubled in the last few months due to coronavirus restrictions easing amid a shortage of new models, according to a trade body.
Year on year, the used car market grew 108.6% in the second quarter, with more than 2.2 million vehicles changing hands, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
The shortage has been linked to a lack of parts. When lockdowns forced production lines to halt, microchip manufacturers diverted the chips that would normally go into new cars to the consumer electronics market, and supply is yet to fully recover.
It has driven up the price of second hand cars, said the SMMT. One dealership, Nuneaton Cars, said buyers were attempting to gazump each other to get hold of used cars already marked as sold.

England midfielder Jack Grealish said he "teared up" as he left Aston Villa for Manchester City.
The 25-year-old joined Villa aged six, but was signed by Manchester City for a British record £100m on Thursday.
It comes after Lionel Messi was shown in tears as he received a standing ovation from team-mates, journalists, officials and his family at a news conference confirming his departure from Barcelona.
Speaking to the media for the first time as a City player, Grealish said: "Everyone has seen the way Messi was at his final press conference.
"That is the exact way I felt myself."
The England player added: "Before I left at the hotel I spoke to the team, the staff and the players and I teared up a bit myself."
It will be a dry day with sunny spells and highs of 23°C (73°F).
