    The crash happened on Sunday on Derrington Lane, off the A518 Newport Road, near Stafford Castle.

    Staffordshire Police said the 56-year-old man, from Telford, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    The woman, from Stafford, has not yet been formally identified.

    Community groups in Stafford have joined forces to create welcome packs for refugees fleeing Afghanistan.

    Imani's Incredible Eats and shoeboxes4refugees are trying to put together items including toiletries, uniforms and food items.

    They are asking for donations to make those being relocated locally feel welcome when they arrive.

    There is also an online fundraiser from a number of other charities in Stafford to help support refugee families.

    He was on foot at the junction of Chester Road and Birmingham Road, Bickenhill, near Solihull, the ambulance service said., external

    Paramedics found him in a critical condition and said he died at the scene.

    Western Power Distribution says electricity should be back by now to most of the hundreds of homes affected by power cuts near Shrewsbury on Tuesday morning.

    More than 700 homes were initially left without power in the SY5 and SY3 postcodes.

    There are still nearly 30 homes in Shrewsbury which should be reconnected by 11:00 BST.

    Birmingham City have signed striker Troy Deeney on a two-year deal after he left Watford.

    Deeney was out of contract next summer, but his departure was announced prior to his move to Blues. He scored 140 goals in 419 games for the Hornets, after joining from Walsall in August 2010.

    Speaking to Blues' club channels following his signing, Deeney said: "Everyone knows that this is my team, I've made that clear in the past but if I was going to join Blues it had to be right for all parties.

    "I believe in the existing project here and, having spoken to the Gaffer [Lee Bowyer] and Craig [Gardner], can clearly visualise my role in the squad."

  9. Woman dies in three-vehicle crash in Herefordshirepublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    A woman has died after three vehicles crashed in Herefordshire, police said, external.

    Officers were called to the A44 Worcester Road near Bromyard on Sunday at 12:20 BST after a silver Skoda Octavia estate, a blue Audi Q5 and a white Volvo Traffic Artic lorry had collided.

    The driver of the Audi, a 44 year-old woman from Leominster, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

    Her next of kin have been informed, West Mercia Police said, adding no-one else involved in the collision had been injured.

    The road was closed for several hours while investigation and recovery work took place.

    Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward.

    Garden waste collections have been suspended due to strike action in the Sandwell area.

    Residents were being made aware some employees at Serco, the council’s waste service provider, would be taking strike action on Tuesday, the authority has said.

    It has agreed to suspend garden waste collections from Monday 30 August to Friday 3 September to allow remaining staff to concentrate on collecting domestic waste and recycling bins.

    On Tuesday bin crews will prioritise domestic waste bin collections. Recycling bin collections would take place, but there may be delays, the council said.

    Residents who do not receive a collection on their usual day should leave bins out until they have been emptied, which "will be done as soon as possible".

    People affected by suspending garden waste collections who are unable to wait until their next collection day can go to the tip and bookings can be made by visiting the council website.

    The action by GMB union members began at 05:30 BST and is the first in a series of weekly walkouts, BBC Radio WM reports.
