Julian Mitchell, the engineer's great nephew, was at the museum as the aircraft was revealed in a £5.4m glass gallery marking Battle of Britain day.
"The Spitfire is a wonderful symbol of hope and success and ultimately victory," he said. "It has endured over all these years and it is still important for people locally and nationally.
"What I think would have made RJ really proud would be to think somebody comes down here, sees what has been done, and is inspired to follow in his footsteps in engineering or design-based work. He would be truly proud."
West Midlands Police officer James Ankrett admitted forming the inappropriate relationship in 2017.

The outdoor Abbey Fields Swimming Pool, which had been open for 123 years, shut in 2019.
There had been anger from residents over the closure, with campaigners at the time saying there was "overwhelming support" to keep the facility.
Following approval by Warwick District Council’s Planning Committee on Tuesday, work is set to start early next year to improve the site, and create a second indoor pool with an adjoining sun terrace and a café.
Councillor Liam Bartlett said it was "great news"
Everyone Active’s Contract Manager, Gareth Wagg added: "We are really excited that the new plans for Abbey Fields Swimming Pool will now be realised, allowing us to expand our swimming lesson programmes and sessions."
A decision to close Rugby's ambulance station will be raised in Parliament later today following a petition to save it.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said only one ambulance is stationed there and it responds to less than 4% of call-outs in the immediate area. They argue it would be more efficient and cost effective for it to be based elsewhere.
However, more than 4,000 people have signed a petition calling for the ambulance service to have a rethink and MP Mark Pawsey is set to raise the issue in the House of Commons.
Alison Livesey, who set up the campaign, believes lives will be put at risk if the closure goes ahead, citing long waiting times for ambulance services.
The ambulance service announced it was reviewing the future of 11 of its community stations, including in Rugby, back in August.
It said changes would be focussed on "making the best use of all our resources".

A former GP surgery in Hereford is being used to hold clinics for patients who'd normally be seen at the County Hospital.
Sarum House, near the Cathedral, has been refurbished and now includes 11 clinic rooms which will be used by nursing, physiotherapy and psychology teams.
Services such as district nursing, midwifery, vision screening and bladder and bowel health will be provided there and it's hoped it'll make it easier for patients to attend.
The Wye Valley NHS Trust said it wanted to create "an easy to reach clinic for patients which avoids the need for them to visit the main County Hospital site".
The refurbished building also contains four offices, a reception and staff rest area.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was receiving "more calls than New Year's Eve" after a surge in callouts this week.
Tuesday marked the service's fourth busiest day ever with 6,392 emergency calls made. It estimates a normal day would see about 4,000.
On Monday, paramedic Adam Aston shared a post on social media where he called the NHS "broken" after arriving with a patient at hospital only to be told to join a queue of more than 20 other ambulances with a five-hour wait.
Speaking to BBC Radio WM, his colleague Nathan Hudson said demand had been "relentless".
"It's tough on the front line," he added.
He said patients were relying more on paramedics because "access to primary care has been difficult", meaning more people make emergency calls when they aren't necessary.
Looking ahead to the winter, he said: "I think it's going to be extremely tough".
"I can't sit here and say everything's going to be OK because I don't think it is," he said, but added that the service was "committed and we will do everything we can to make sure we can save as many lives as possible".

Plans for a pizza takeaway in Stourbridge have been turned down over concerns it would increase anti-social behaviour in the area.
Agent Aymen Mahgoub said developers had worked to address concerns after a previous plan for the former launderette on Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, was rejected.
Planners at Dudley Council had backed the new proposals, which developers said would bring the empty unit "back to life" and create seven to eight jobs.
However, resident Sarah McDonald told the meeting on Monday that previous concerns over a fish and chip shop on the parade had "come to pass" with an increase in litter around the shops.
"When you have seagulls landing on your drive where someone has dropped a bag of chips it is pretty appalling," she said.
"More worrying is the increase of anti-social behaviour where the majority of residences are bungalows and residents are elderly and vulnerable."
Ward councillor Peter Miller also spoke out again the plan and said it failed to protect amenities for residents.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a flat fire in Staffordshire.
Emergency services were called to building on Bell Lane, Barlaston shortly before 19:00 on Monday.
The 63-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
It's believed to be an isolated incident, said Staffordshire Police.
No-one was injured in the incident, the force added.
